This study set out to investigate the skills possessed by a sample of UCU students, and how these relate to
trait EI, as reported by the students them selves. The study established that there is no gender difference in
the possession of employability skills, that thinking skills are orthogonal to trait EI, that there is a
statistically significant difference between women and men students in terms of EI. Further the study
established that trait EI predicts generic skills, social skills and personal skills in that order of importance;
besides trait EI predicts employability in high trait students, but not in a low trait EI group. Lastly the
study recommends that there should be a deliberate attempt by universities to enhance the trait EI levels
of their students, in order to raise their employability.
