By applying methodological triangulation strategies, the validity of the research will be enhanced. Secondary research objective (i) To adopt methodological triangulation in data collection and analysis phases to research the problem in question. (ii) To execute in-depth analysis of secondary sources dealing with service quality in the Ugandan investment environment. The secondary sources will shed more light on available strategies for GOU officials to adopt or modify them to meet service quality expectations of FDI clients. (iii) To develop appropriate research instruments and interview guides to collect primary data from GOU officials and FDI clients. (iv) To analyse quantitative primary data and test hypotheses on service quality disparities in the Ugandan investment environment; and use qualitative data analysis to supplement quantitative findings (v) To analyse and recommend possible strategies GOU officials can implement to address issues related to decisions on sector destination for FDI in the Ugandan economy. Research design and Methodology Design: Given the three hypothetical models and the operationalisation thereof, the positivistic approach will be supplemented by the phenomenological approach (Collis & Hussey 2003.47). The adoption of both paradigms is to enhance research findings given the subjective nature of perceptions. In this study, methodological triangulation will lead to collection of quantitative data supplemented by post-survey qualitative data to enhance the validity of the study findings (Collis & Hussey 2009:85). Methodological triangulation will also enable the collection of data from the two sub-samples at different times. The approaches and strategies described will enable the models to be empirically tested with a view of confirming service quality theory with regard to the influence of FDI clients’ Gap 5 and GOU officials’ Gap 1 on FDI decisions on sector destinations in the Uganda investment environment. The data sets will be analysed using both quantitative and qualitative techniques in testing the set hypotheses in this study. Methods: Sampling procedure and sample size: Two sampling methods are considered appropriate for this study, namely, area sampling as the probability sampling method, and judgemental sampling as the non-probability sampling. The minimum sample sizes will be a function of the number of statements on the instrument times five (5) (Veal 2005). Two research instruments will be used for this study; one to source FDI clients’ perceptions and the other GOU officials’ perceptions of quality of investment services. Interval data will be involved in measuring the variables in the study. For the phenomenological part, post-survey individual interviews with be conducted for foreign investors and GOU officials. The purpose of individual interviews is to test the effectiveness of the survey and enhance the study findings. Quantitative data collection: The research instruments that will gather quantitative data to measure variables pertaining to potential disparity between FDI clients’ expected and experienced service quality and GOU officials’ perceptions of FDI clients’ expectations are constructed along the seven (7) dimensions of service quality. The statements to capture the dimensions will be linked to a seven-point Likert-type interval scale anchored by “strongly disagree (1)” and “strongly agree (7)” (Kang & James 2004:270; Zeithaml et al. 1990:175-186). Individual FDI clients and GOU officials will be the units of analysis as regards decisions on different FDI sector destinations in Uganda. Qualitative data collection: As motivated for quantitative data collection, individual FDI clients and GOU officials will serve as the units of analysis for qualitative data. Post-survey individual interviews will be conducted to collect the qualitative data from the two sub-samples (Cooper & Schindler 2006; Krueger 1998; McNamara 2008; Miles & Huberman 1994). 288
Challenges in the Era of Globalization Edited by Emmanuel Obuah Reliability and validity of the measurement instruments: The research instruments will be tested for reliability by interpreting the Cronbach alpha reliability coefficients of the scale items in the two instruments (Collis & Hussey 2003:58). The instrument will be tested for internal consistency where Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficients over 0.8 are considered good, 0.7 acceptable and below 0.6 weak. Multiple linear regressions analysis will be performed to establish if a set of independent variables do explain a proportion of the variance in the dependent variables at a significant level (through a significance test of R-squared) in Figures 2 and 3. The hypotheses will be tested for significance. As the study involved two independent samples, a two-independent samples t-test will be performed to establish perceptual differences between FDI clients’ perceptions and those of GOU officials, if any (Gap 1). To establish if a perceptual difference exists between FDI clients’ expected and experienced quality of investment services, a paired-samples t-test will be performed (Gap 5). To establish the relative importance of the different service quality dimensions to decisions on FDI sector destinations in Uganda, the relative importance of each service quality dimension will be established. Qualitative findings will be used to verify quantitative results on both Gaps 1 and 5. Strategies will be identified and recommendations made to GOU officials with a view of closing Gaps 1 and 5 and increasing FDI inflows to different sector destinations in the Ugandan economy. Dissemination of results The project results will be dissemination in several ways namely by publishing articles in academic journals, presenting results to policy makers involved in influencing policy, presentations at conferences, organising seminars and workshops. The seminars and workshops will be destination sector specific to enhance their impact on specific sector policy reviews with a possible increase in FDI inflows to key sectors of destination namely agriculture, tourism, mining, energy and ICT. It should be noted that the method of dissemination will also be tailored to the specific requirements of the sector as well as FDI clients’ needs. The results are expected to improve on FDI inflows to the Ugandan economy leading to job creation and faster economic growth and development.
