Proceedings of the 12th Annual Conference © 2011 IAABD Foreword Once again we have assembled in Edmonton, one of Canada’s outstanding and ecologically valuable cities to exchange ideas on a very provocative theme for this conference “Challenges in the Era of Globalization”. Defying a common definition, globalization is understood to be a “ process of increasing interconnectedness between societies such that events in one part of the world more and more have effects on peoples and societies far away” (Smith and Baylis 2005:8). ) Viewed from this lens, the theme of this year’s conference is apt and germane particularly at this auspicious time when many African states are still struggle to tackle many basic problems exacerbated by lack of sustainable growth and development and democratic governance. As an integral part of the global economy Africa has been vulnerable to the shocks and challenges of the system. In an evolving global economy, Africa has engaged many ways and measures of addressing its problems. For example, many African states have embraced different endogamous and exogenous models of development: from the trickle down import industrialization strategy of the early post-independence years to the structural adjustments prescription of the Washington Consensus. Accordingly, African states have adopted different paths to growth and development: socialist or capitalist paths. African states have also responded to the challenges of sustainable growth and technological development collectively through the creation of (sub) regional schemes and robust regional economic integration groupings. Similarly, African scholars in management studies, development studies and other related disciplines have provided theoretical frameworks to growth and development. Our Academy has been in the forefront of scholarship in various aspects of African studies. In the past 11 years, the various IAABD’s conference compendia have focused on different strategies of achieving economic growth and development and the challenges thereof. On the political level, many African states have embarked on the road to civil democracy. Military regimes are no longer fashionable. Furthermore, there is a gradual erosion of the one party/no opposition party symptomatic of African politics. Today in Africa opposition parties are winning not ony legislative contests but presidential contests. Also the entitlement syndrome which has characterized political leadership is seriously under challenge. Across Africa women and other marginalized ethnic groups are incrementally, through constitutional and legal means ascending to high echelon of political authority. However, some of these achievements are been mired by the challenge of nonsustainability of legitimacy in the nascent democracies. At the economic level, the picture is mixed; the continent has diversified its economic relations and the European countries have lost dominance of the the continent but it continue to face hydra-headed problems. China has emerged as a serious partner and is investing in the continent. However, the continent is still ravaged with unemployment, poverty, debt, corruption and other social problems exacerbated by the process of globalization. There were dozens of papers presented in volume 12 of the IAABD peered reviewed Proceedings. In addition, there were also dozens of work in progress not included in this volume but were presented in various sections at the conference. The papers were meticulously reviewed and selected by the track chairs to underscore the relevance and essence of the conference theme. These papers and presentations touched on various aspects of Africa’s growth and development and integration into the global economy. xii
Challenges in the Era of Globalization Edited by Emmanuel Obuah While some papers focused on specific issues in different countries in Africa, others dealt with issues that affect the continent as a whole. Yet, some papers and presentations examined the impacts and challenges of specific global phenomena/issues or processes on Africa. Furthermore, the diversity of the papers in this volume also reflects the copious academic versatility and multidisciplinary background of the contributors. The Journal of African Business (JAB) is the official journal of the IAABD. I encourage you to submit your articles for consideration for publication in JAB. The IAABD peer reviewed Proceedings has become an important source for other academic journals seeking for potential research articles on Africa for publication. While the reviewers painstakingly did their work, the authors are responsible for the views and conclusions expressed in this volume. It has been an honor and privilege to serve IAABD in various capacities, particularly as the Proceeding Editor. I owe great gratitude to several individuals who contributed in various ways to the success of this conference and to the publication of this volume. I am very grateful to all the authors who submitted their papers and whose papers are contained in this volume. I am particularly thankful to the Program Chair, Dr. Emmanuel Cleeve and the track chairs for undergoing the painstaking and tedious review process of all the papers and sharing the thoughts with the various authors. I also wish to thank the Local Steering committee for their tireless efforts in making this conference a success.
