salary ranges for each classification. The employment <strong>of</strong> all new members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the staff and any changes in status <strong>of</strong> present members are processed<br />

through the Office <strong>of</strong> Nonacademic Personnel. Promotions either through<br />

salary increases or through changes in classification are processed through<br />

the same channels. All pay rates are subject to approval <strong>of</strong> that <strong>of</strong>fice. Transfers<br />

between departments should not be proposed or agreed to until they have<br />

been approved by the Personnel Office.<br />

(b) Detailed rules and regulations are published separately in the Policy<br />

and Rules Relating to Compensation and Working Conditions, authorized and<br />

approved by the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees.<br />

WAGES OF STUDENT ASSISTANTS<br />

Sec. 28. All student employees are to be paid on the basis <strong>of</strong> a classification<br />

and scale <strong>of</strong> wages <strong>of</strong> student assistants approved by the President <strong>of</strong><br />

the University. For current schedule <strong>of</strong> wages see The Business Policy and<br />

Procedure Manual.<br />

RETIREMENT, DEATH, SURVIVOR, AND DISABILITY BENEFITS<br />

Sec. 29. (a) General. University policy provides for the payment <strong>of</strong><br />

salary in case <strong>of</strong> illness or other disability for specified periods as described<br />

below. In addition to the benefits provided by the University, a system <strong>of</strong><br />

retirement, death, survivor, and disability benefits was established by a special<br />

act <strong>of</strong> the General Assembly, approved July 21, 1941, and subsequently<br />

amended, known as the University Retirement System <strong>of</strong> Illinois, a state<br />

agency separate and distinct from the University <strong>of</strong> Illinois.<br />

In accordance with policies adopted by the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees on December<br />

13, 1925, and as subsequently amended, a program <strong>of</strong> retiring allowance?<br />

and death benefits is provided for the faculty, administrative, and mechanical<br />

staff retiring between September 1, 1925, and September 1, 1941, the date<br />

the University Retirement System became effective.<br />

(b) Participation in University Retirement System. A deduction is made<br />

from the salaries or wages <strong>of</strong> all employees who are participants in the retirement<br />

system, as defined by law.<br />

(c) Disability Benefits. The University <strong>of</strong> Illinois provides disability<br />

benefits as follows:<br />

(1) Nonacademic Employees. For disability from any cause, each employee<br />

shall accumulate without limit disability leave with full pay at the<br />

rate <strong>of</strong> one working day for each month <strong>of</strong> service.<br />

(2) Academic or Administrative Staff. Noncumulative leave is granted<br />

with full pay for disability in each year <strong>of</strong> service, including the first, <strong>of</strong><br />

fifteen calendar days. In addition, a staff member is eligible for extended<br />

disability leave <strong>of</strong> ten calendar days with full pay for each year <strong>of</strong> service,<br />

the unused portion <strong>of</strong> which is cumulative in any year to a maximum ot<br />

sixty days.<br />

Subject to the approval <strong>of</strong> the President, a member who has completed<br />

at least three full years <strong>of</strong> service may be granted a disability leave with full<br />

pay for a period (including the annual and extended leaves described above)<br />

not to exceed one-half <strong>of</strong> his appointment year.<br />

No deduction <strong>of</strong> time from the annual leave or the extended leave is<br />

made if the member is ill or disabled at a time when he is not expected to<br />

furnish regular service to the University.
