RANK OF CLINICAL ASSOCIATE IN THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE<br />

(8) The University Senate recommends the establishment <strong>of</strong> the rank "clinical<br />

associate" for certain appointments to the nonsalaried faculty <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong><br />

Medicine. This involves an amendment <strong>of</strong> the revised University <strong>of</strong> Illinois<br />

Statutes, approved by the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees January 16, 1957, to become effective<br />

September I, 1957, in Section 35, paragraph (c), the revised paragraph to read<br />

(new language is in italics) :<br />

The following academic ranks are recognized: pr<strong>of</strong>essor, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />

assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor, instructor or research associate, and assistant. For the College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Medicine the rank <strong>of</strong> clinical associate is also recognised. Appropriate academic<br />

rank, with the rights and privileges pertaining thereto, may be accorded members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the administrative staff.<br />

I concur in this amendment.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Watkins, this amendment was adopted.<br />

AMENDMENT OF UNIVERSITY STATUTES<br />

(9) The University Senate recommends that the revised University <strong>of</strong> Illinois<br />

Statutes, approved by the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees on January 16, 1957, be amended by<br />

the addition to Division III, Subdivision C-i, a new Section 18-2:<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Colleges at Urbana-Champaign<br />

Section 18-2. (a) The College <strong>of</strong> Veterinary Medicine <strong>of</strong> the Urbana-Champaign<br />

campus <strong>of</strong> the University is a pr<strong>of</strong>essional college within the meaning <strong>of</strong><br />

this Section.<br />

(b) The supervision <strong>of</strong> student affairs <strong>of</strong> students enrolled in the College <strong>of</strong><br />

Veterinary Medicine, excluding discipline, is the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong><br />

Veterinary Medicine. A Committee on Student Affairs shall be elected by the<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> the College.<br />

(c) Student discipline for students enrolled in the College <strong>of</strong> Veterinary<br />

Medicine shall be administered by the Committee on Discipline <strong>of</strong> the Urbana-<br />

Champaign Senate in accordance with the provisions <strong>of</strong> Section 6, paragraph (h).<br />

The Senate Committee on Student Discipline shall, after consulting the Dean <strong>of</strong><br />

the College <strong>of</strong> Veterinary Medicine, appoint a subcommittee on discipline for the<br />

students enrolled in the College. The Senate Committee on Student Discipline shall<br />

hear and decide cases appealed to it from this subcommittee. The provisions <strong>of</strong><br />

Section 6, paragraph (h), relating to the formulation <strong>of</strong> procedures and original<br />

and appellate jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> the Senate Committee, shall apply to disciplinary<br />

cases hereunder.<br />

This amendment was proposed by the faculty <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Veterinary<br />

Medicine and recommended by a special committee appointed by the Vice-President<br />

and Provost to consider the change. It is consistent with a similar amendment<br />

approved by the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees on March 12, 1957, with respect to administration<br />

<strong>of</strong> student discipline and student affairs in the College <strong>of</strong> Law.<br />

I concur.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Herrick, this amendment was adopted.<br />

CHANGES IN ORGANIZATION OF SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION<br />

(10) The Director <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Physical Education recommends the following<br />

administrative changes in the organization <strong>of</strong> the School, effective September 1,<br />

1957:<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> the School shall be changed to College <strong>of</strong> Physical Education.<br />

The chief executive <strong>of</strong>ficer shall be the Dean <strong>of</strong> the College.<br />

There shall be established a new Department <strong>of</strong> Health and Safety Education.<br />

Instruction in this field is now being given jointly by the Department <strong>of</strong> Physical
