and Educational Hospitals and in the College <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy — leave <strong>of</strong><br />

absence for military service, without salary, December I, 1956-August 31, 1957.<br />

WINTER, EDWARD H., Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Anthropology — leave <strong>of</strong> absence,<br />

without pay, one year from September 1, 1957, so that he may do research<br />

work under the Ford Foundation grant for studies in Cross-Cultural Regularities<br />

<strong>of</strong> Change Among Native Populations, including East Africa.<br />

CANCELLATION OF SABBATICAL LEAVE<br />

FRAENKEL, GOTTFRIED S., Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Entomology — sabbatical leave <strong>of</strong> absence<br />

granted him for the second semester <strong>of</strong> 1956-57 cancelled, without prejudice.<br />

MINUTES APPROVED<br />

The Secretary presented the minutes <strong>of</strong> the meeting <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Trustees <strong>of</strong> October 22, 1956, press pro<strong>of</strong> copies <strong>of</strong> which have previously<br />

been sent to the members <strong>of</strong> the Board in advance.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Swain, these minutes were approved as printed<br />

on pages 105 to 145, inclusive.<br />

EXECUTIVE SESSION<br />

At this point, an executive session was requested and ordered for consideration<br />

<strong>of</strong> the following item <strong>of</strong> business.<br />

RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY PATENT COMMITTEE<br />

(19) The University Patent Committee submits, with the concurrence <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> the University Research Board, the following recommendations relating<br />

to inventions by members <strong>of</strong> the staff:<br />

1. Linear bearing converter and bearing average computer — Donald L. Bitzer,<br />

Research Assistant, Control Systems Laboratory, inventor. This is a device which<br />

can be attached to existing radio direction finding systems to facilitate in accurately<br />

observing, averaging, and recording radio bearings.<br />

2. Panoramic radio direction finder — Harold D. Webb, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Electrical Engineering, and Donald L. Bitzer, Research Assistant, Control Systems<br />

Laboratory, inventors. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this invention is to provide a panoramic<br />

display <strong>of</strong> radio frequency bearings versus frequency on the face <strong>of</strong> a cathode<br />

ray tube.<br />

3. Equiangular spiral antenna — Victor H. Rumsey, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Electrical<br />

Engineering, inventor. This was developed under an investigation that is classified<br />

by the U. S. Government for security reasons.<br />

4. Radio direction finder system bearing computer — pulse delay analog by<br />

Albert D. Bailey, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Electrical Engineering, inventor. This<br />

invention is to accomplish the transformation <strong>of</strong> data <strong>of</strong> a radio direction finder<br />

for immediate integration and processing by a computer.<br />

5. Radio direction finder bearing computer — Albert D. Bailey, inventor. This<br />

invention relates to a radio direction finder bearing indication and determination<br />

which is intended to replace the indicator and the human observer.<br />

The Head <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Electrical Engineering and the University<br />

Patent Committee recommend the release <strong>of</strong> the above inventions to the Office <strong>of</strong><br />

Naval Research, the sponsoring agency.<br />

I concur in this recommendation.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Williamson, this recommendation was approved.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Johnston, the Board adjourned.<br />
