Change in Status<br />

1. WILLIAM F. HUGHES, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Head <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Ophthalmology,<br />

and Ophthalmologist-in-Chief <strong>of</strong> the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, has<br />

asked to be relieved <strong>of</strong> his administrative duties, effective September 1, 1958,<br />

but to be continued on the faculty as Clinical Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, without salary.<br />

Appointments to Nonacademic Staff<br />

The Director <strong>of</strong> Nonacademic Personnel reports the folio-wing appointments to<br />

supervisory positions <strong>of</strong> upper level responsibility.<br />

1. GEORGE H. ADAMS, Personnel Officer in the Office <strong>of</strong> Nonacademic Personnel,<br />

beginning January I, 1958, at an annual salary <strong>of</strong> $6,000.<br />

2. WAYNE E. CONEKY, Assistant Manager <strong>of</strong> Public information in the Office <strong>of</strong><br />

Public Information, Chicago Colleges, beginning January 20, 1958, at an<br />

annual salary <strong>of</strong> $4,800.<br />

3. ELLA S. GOLDSCHMIDT, Assistant Food Production Manager in the Research<br />

and Educational Hospitals Dietary Department, beginning February 3, 1958, at<br />

an annual salary <strong>of</strong> $4,500.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Herrick, these appointments were confirmed.<br />

APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR OF HEALTH SERVICES<br />

(3) I recommend the appointment <strong>of</strong> Dr. Orville S. Walters, presently Staff<br />

Psychiatrist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Danville, Illinois, as<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Hygiene on indefinite tenure beginning August 1, 1958, and Director<br />

<strong>of</strong> University Health Services beginning August I, 1958, and continuing to September<br />

I, 1959, at a total salary <strong>of</strong> $17,000 a year on "Y" basis.<br />

The appointment as Director <strong>of</strong> the Health Services has been recommended<br />

by a special search committee, and the recommendation is concurred in by the<br />

Vice-President and Provost.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Herrick, this appointment was approved.<br />

HEADSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS<br />

(4) Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Stewart S. Cairns, Head <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Mathematics, has<br />

asked to be relieved <strong>of</strong> the headship <strong>of</strong> the Department at the end <strong>of</strong> the academic<br />

>' e ar so that he may devote more time to teaching and research. He has been Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

and Head <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Mathematics since coming to the University<br />

°i Illinois in 1948.
