to keep experimental animals (rats) in proper condition for experimentation.<br />

Funds are available in an appropriation made by the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees<br />

on July 25, 1956.<br />

I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Board be authorized to execute this contract.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Swain, this contract was awarded, and the<br />

Comptroller and Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board were authorized to execute the<br />

same.<br />

CONTRACT FOR REMODELING IN RESEARCH AND<br />

EDUCATIONAL HOSPITALS<br />

(16) The Director <strong>of</strong> the Physical Plant and the Vice-President and Comptroller<br />

recommend award <strong>of</strong> a contract for $289,749 to Russell Mansfield, 1229 West<br />

Glenlake Avenue, Chicago 40, Illinois, for remodeling in the Research and Educational<br />

Hospitals, subject to conditions outlined below. The work will consist<br />

<strong>of</strong> alterations <strong>of</strong> the second floor, converting the area into general and specialized<br />

laboratories for the Hospitals, to centralize facilities which are now in<br />

various parts <strong>of</strong> the building and adding utilities for the converted area. The<br />

contract also covers necessary alterations in the equipment penthouse. The contract<br />

includes:<br />

Base bid, this is all remodeling necessary to bring the general<br />

laboratories into one area $ 99 870<br />

Alternate 2, to include hematology laboratory, add 14 372<br />

Alternate 3, to include electrocardiogram laboratory, add 15 239<br />

Alternate 4, to include blood batik and remodeling <strong>of</strong> penthouse 160 268<br />

Total $289 749<br />

Funds are available in the state appropriations for 1955-57 for capital improvements<br />

and in matching federal funds to pay for the work included in the<br />

base bid and in alternates two and three. Bid specifications provide that work is<br />

to proceed only on written authorization from the University; this authorization<br />

will be given for those provisions in the contract for which funds are available,<br />

such notification to be given no later than September 1, 1957. Any part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

work which has not been authorized in writing shall be deemed to have been<br />

cancelled, and the contract will be reduced thereby.<br />

The work covered by alternate four is contingent upon availability <strong>of</strong> funds<br />

for remodeling in the state appropriations for 1957-59.<br />

The Director <strong>of</strong> the Physical Plant and the Vice-President and Comptroller<br />

recommend award <strong>of</strong> the contract under these conditions, and that the Contractor<br />

be authorized to proceed immediately with work covered by the base bid and<br />

alternates two and three.<br />

I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Board be authorized to execute the contract.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Holt, this contract was awarded, and the<br />

Comptroller and Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board were authorized to execute<br />

the same.<br />

CONTRACT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDING FOR<br />

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING RESEARCH<br />

(17) The Vice-President and Comptroller recommends award <strong>of</strong> a contract for<br />

$43,958.00 to Ernest H. Grothe, Tolono, Illinois, for the construction <strong>of</strong> a<br />

thirty-two foot by thirty-two foot frame laboratory building including all electrical,<br />

plumbing, digging <strong>of</strong> well, sewage disposal system, roadway and parking<br />

area in Tolono Township (south half <strong>of</strong> northwest one-quarter <strong>of</strong> Section 17.<br />

Range 8), for the Radio Direction Finding Section <strong>of</strong> the Electrical Engineering<br />

Research Laboratory. This building is needed for a research project under<br />

a contract with the Office <strong>of</strong> Naval Research which has been authorized by the<br />

Board, and will be constructed on land leased by the University with an option<br />

to purchase.<br />

I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Board be authorized to execute this contract.<br />
