MEMORIAL TO EARL ROY SERLES<br />

Mrs. Watkins <strong>of</strong>fered the following resolution and moved its adoption:<br />

The Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees records with pr<strong>of</strong>ound sorrow the death on March<br />

l 3> 1957, <strong>of</strong> Dr. Earl Roy Series, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy and Dean <strong>of</strong> the College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pharmacy since July I, 1940.<br />

Dean Series was born in Salem, South Dakota, on November 18, 1890. He<br />

received his academic and pr<strong>of</strong>essional training at the South Dakota State College,<br />

where he graduated with the degrees <strong>of</strong> graduate in Pharmacy in 1911,<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in 1915, and Master <strong>of</strong> Science in 1917; and at the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Minnesota where he received the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy in<br />

1934. In 1953 South Dakota State College conferred upon him the honorary<br />

degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Science.<br />

Following his graduation he was in commercial work as a pharmacist for a<br />

short time, but most <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>essional career since 1913 was devoted to teaching<br />

at his Alma Mater and at the University <strong>of</strong> Illinois. From 1923 until 1940 he<br />

was Dean <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy at South Dakota State College. On July<br />

1, 1940, he came to the University <strong>of</strong> Illinois as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy and<br />

Dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy. During the academic year 1953-54 ne a ' so
