to certify those degrees to the Urbana-Champaign Senate. Such degrees,<br />

however, shall be so phrased that they cannot be confused with any other<br />

degrees <strong>of</strong>fered by the University.<br />

COUNCIL ON TEACHER EDUCATION<br />

Sec. 24. (a) The Council on Teacher Education is composed <strong>of</strong> the deans<br />

and the directors <strong>of</strong> colleges and schools which <strong>of</strong>fer curricula in the training<br />

<strong>of</strong> teachers for the elementary and secondary schools and for the community<br />

(junior) colleges. The chairman shall be named by the President.<br />

(b) The duties <strong>of</strong> the Council are to formulate policies and programs in<br />

the fields <strong>of</strong> teacher selection, retention, guidance and training, and placement<br />

in the schools named in paragraph (a), in conformity with educational<br />

policies established by the Urbana-Champaign Senate.<br />

(c) On the nomination <strong>of</strong> the Dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Education and<br />

with the approval <strong>of</strong> the Council on Teacher Education, there shall be appointed<br />

(1) a Coordinator <strong>of</strong> Teacher-Training Programs, and (2) a Director<br />

<strong>of</strong> Teacher Placement. These <strong>of</strong>ficers shall be responsible to the Dean <strong>of</strong> the<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Education, who shall act as the executive <strong>of</strong>ficer for the Council<br />

in directing them in the performance <strong>of</strong> their duties.<br />

(d) The Council is authorized to appoint area-<strong>of</strong>-specialization committees<br />

in each <strong>of</strong> the major teaching fields, a Committee on Teacher Placement,<br />

and such other committees as may be needed. These committees shall be<br />

composed <strong>of</strong> representatives from the College <strong>of</strong> Education and from the<br />

major subject-matter fields represented in any given curriculum.<br />

The area-<strong>of</strong>-specialization committees shall be responsible for the improvement<br />

<strong>of</strong> their respective teacher-education curricula, counseling procedures<br />

in their areas, and other activities related thereto. They shall recommend<br />

action to the Council on Teacher Education.<br />

(e) Students shall not ordinarily be eligible for University approval <strong>of</strong><br />

their status as prospective teachers unless they have elected a curriculum<br />

approved by the Council on Teacher Education. It is understood, however,<br />

that this rule will not prejudice the status <strong>of</strong> students in any teaching area<br />

for which a curriculum is in the process <strong>of</strong> preparation.<br />

(f) All curricula shall be approved by the Council on Teacher Education,<br />

by the respective colleges, and by the Urbana-Champaign Senate. They shall<br />

be <strong>of</strong>fered in appropriate colleges and schools.<br />

E. CHICAGO UNITS<br />

CHICAGO PROFESSIONAL COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS<br />

Sec. 25. (a) The Chicago Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Colleges and Schools* are integral<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> the University. They shall be governed by the general provisions <strong>of</strong><br />

these Statutes, except as otherwise specifically provided.<br />

(b) They shall be organized according to the principles stated in Sections<br />

8 to 16 inclusive.<br />

(c) The legislative body for the Chicago Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Colleges shall be<br />

the Senate <strong>of</strong> the Chicago Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Colleges, as provided in Section 6,<br />

(d) There shall be a Vice-President in Charge <strong>of</strong> the Chicago Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Colleges, who, under the direction <strong>of</strong> the President, shall be the chiei<br />

executive <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> these colleges and schools and <strong>of</strong> such other academic,<br />
