On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Herrick, these appointments were confirmed.<br />

CHAIRMANSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS<br />

(4) Pr<strong>of</strong>essor H. K. Allen, Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Economics, has asked<br />

to be relieved <strong>of</strong> the duties <strong>of</strong> chairmanship effective September 1, 1957. To<br />

replace him, the Dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Commerce and Business Administration<br />

recommends the appointment <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John F. Bell as Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Economics for two years beginning September I, 1957, in addition to<br />

his position as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Economics on indefinite tenure. The salary <strong>of</strong> this<br />

position will be determined later when the budget for 1957-58 is prepared and<br />

submitted to the Board for approval.<br />

Before submitting this nomination, the Dean consulted the Executive Committee<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Economics in accordance with the provision in the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Illinois Statutes governing the appointment <strong>of</strong> a chairman <strong>of</strong> a<br />

department, and the recommendation is supported by the Vice-President and<br />

Provost and the Dean <strong>of</strong> the Graduate College.<br />

I concur.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Swain, this appointment was approved.<br />

HEADSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE<br />

(5) The Dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Commerce and Business Administration recommends<br />

the appointment <strong>of</strong> Dr. Paul M. Van Arsdell, presently Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

Economics and Associate Dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Commerce and Business Administration,<br />

as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Finance on indefinite tenure and Head <strong>of</strong> the new<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Finance beginning September I, 1957. The salary <strong>of</strong> this position<br />

will be determined later when the budget for 1957-58 is prepared and submitted to<br />

the Board for approval. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Van Arsdell will give up the position <strong>of</strong><br />

Associate Dean.<br />

All members <strong>of</strong> the new Department <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essorial rank have been consulted<br />

in accordance with the provision in the University <strong>of</strong> Illinois Statutes governing<br />

the appointment <strong>of</strong> a head <strong>of</strong> a department, and the recommendation is supported<br />

by the Vice-President and Provost and the Dean <strong>of</strong> the Graduate College.<br />

I concur.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Johnston, this appointment was approved.<br />

CHANGE IN STATUS OF ROBBEN W. FLEMING<br />

(6) Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Robben W. Fleming, who has been serving as Director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Labor and Industrial Relations since September 1, 1952, and the Dean<br />

<strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Law have jointly requested his transfer to the faculty <strong>of</strong> the<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Law as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Law beginning September 1, 1957.<br />

It is understood that Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Fleming will continue as Director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Labor and Industrial Relations during the academic year 1957-58, or<br />

until his successor as Director <strong>of</strong> the Institute is appointed in case such an appointment<br />

is made before June, 1958, and will teach part time in the College <strong>of</strong> Law<br />

during 1957-58. Thereafter he will become a full-time member <strong>of</strong> the Law faculty<br />

and an associate member <strong>of</strong> the faculty <strong>of</strong> the Institute <strong>of</strong> Labor and Industrial<br />

Relations. He will teach courses in the field <strong>of</strong> labor law, an area to be expanded<br />

in the College <strong>of</strong> Law curriculum.<br />

I have approved this transfer and request confirmation <strong>of</strong> my action.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Nickell, the President's action was confirmed.<br />

CANCELLATIONS OF SABBATICAL LEAVES OF ABSENCE<br />

(7) The sabbatical leaves <strong>of</strong> absence granted the following members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

faculty have been cancelled, on their request and without prejudice.<br />
