the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board be authorized to execute the same, subject to the<br />

release <strong>of</strong> funds by the Governor.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Williamson, these contracts were awarded, as<br />

recommended, and the Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board<br />

were authorized to execute the same. This action was taken by the<br />

following vote: Aye, Mr. Herrick, Mr. Hughes, Mr. Johnston^ Mr.<br />

Livingston, Mr. Swain, Mrs. Watkins, Mr. Williamson; no, none;<br />

absent, Mr. Bissell, Mrs. Holt, Mr. Nickell, Mr. Stratton.<br />

CONTRACT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF RADAR ANTENNA TOWER<br />

(19) The Director <strong>of</strong> the Physical Plant Department and the Vice-President and<br />

Comptroller recommend award <strong>of</strong> a contract for $39,080 to C. A. Petry & Sons,<br />

Inc., Champaign, the lowest bidder, for the construction <strong>of</strong> a radar antenna tower<br />

north <strong>of</strong> and adjacent to the Engineering Research Laboratory. This tower is<br />

needed for research being done at the University under a contract with the United<br />

States Army Signal Corps, and the cost will be paid from contract funds.<br />

I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board<br />

be authorized to execute the contract, subject to approval by the contract <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong><br />

the Signal Corps.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Hughes, the Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong><br />

the Board were authorized to execute this contract.<br />

CONTRACT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF LODGE IN<br />

ROBERT ALLERTON PARK<br />

(20) The Director <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> University Extension, the Director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Physical Plant Department, and the Vice-President and Comptroller recommend<br />

the award <strong>of</strong> a contract for $57,880 to C. A. Petry & Sons, Inc., Champaign, the<br />

lowest bidder for the construction <strong>of</strong> a ten-unit motel type lodge in Robert Allerton<br />

Park east <strong>of</strong> and as an annex to Allerton House to provide additional housing<br />

needed for participants in conferences, seminars, and other events held there. It<br />

will also be available to other transient guests.<br />

The Committee on Buildings and Grounds on June 20, 1957, authorized the<br />

employment <strong>of</strong> Smith, Kratz, and Associates, Urbana, as architects, and on October<br />

28, 1957, the Committee approved their design <strong>of</strong> the building to be known as<br />

"Evergreen Lodge."<br />

Funds will be assigned for this construction from Allerton House Operations<br />

surplus and Division <strong>of</strong> University Extension income from short courses and other<br />

such types <strong>of</strong> income-producing programs.<br />

I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board<br />

be authorized to execute this contract.<br />

CONTRACT FOR ELECTRICAL SERVICE AT CHICAGO<br />

UNDERGRADUATE DIVISION<br />

(21) The city <strong>of</strong> Chicago has been billing the University for electrical service at<br />

the Chicago Undergraduate Division. The City Council has passed an ordinance<br />

authorizing the Commonwealth Edison Company to take over certain facilities and<br />

bill the University directly. The Commonwealth Edison Company will turn over to<br />

the University eleven transformers owned by the Company, at a nominal price <strong>of</strong><br />

•f'-oo, and will sell power directly to the University. The estimated cost <strong>of</strong> this<br />

service is now $33,750 a year, and, under the new arrangement, it is estimated to<br />

cos t $30,750.
