and remodeling and minor additions to existing buildings at Urbana-Champaign<br />

and at the Chicago Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Colleges" for the second.<br />

I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board<br />

be authorized to execute these contracts.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Watkins, these contracts were awarded, and the<br />

Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board were authorized to execute<br />

the same.<br />

CONTRACT FOR INSTALLATION OF PNEUMATIC TUBE SYSTEM<br />

IN THE RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL HOSPITALS<br />

(21) The Director <strong>of</strong> the Physical Plant and the Vice-President and Comptroller<br />

recommend award <strong>of</strong> a contract for $3,200 to the Lamson Corporation, Chicago,<br />

for installation <strong>of</strong> a pneumatic tube system in the Hospital Laboratories <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Research and Educational Hospitals.<br />

The work will consist <strong>of</strong> installation <strong>of</strong> a tube station in the Hospital Laboratories<br />

and connection <strong>of</strong> this station to the central dispatching system <strong>of</strong> the medical<br />

records room. It is a part <strong>of</strong> the remodeling <strong>of</strong> the Hospital Laboratories nowbeing<br />

done under the federal matching funds program for improvement and expansion<br />

<strong>of</strong> health research facilities.<br />

Funds are available in a federal grant (U.S. Public Health Service RC-87-<br />

Remodeling Research and Educational Hospitals Laboratories) and in the state<br />

appropriation for 1955-57 "for rehabilitation and remodeling and minor additions to<br />

existing buildings at Urbana-Champaign and at the Chicago Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Colleges."<br />

I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board<br />

be authorized to execute this contract.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Holt, this contract was awarded, and the Comptroller<br />

and the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Board were authorized to execute the<br />

same.<br />

CONTRACTS FOR COAL PURCHASES FOR ABBOTT POWER PLANT<br />

(22) The Director <strong>of</strong> Purchases, the Vice-President and Comptroller, and the<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> the Physical Plant recommend award <strong>of</strong> the following contracts for<br />

130,000 tons <strong>of</strong> coal screenings to be delivered to the Abbott Power Plant during<br />

the period July 1, 1957, through June 30, 1959:<br />

Sealed bids on uniform specifications were opened on May 24, 1957- Invitations<br />

were sent to twenty-four producers and sales agencies and advertisements were<br />

published in three daily papers.<br />

The bids are evaluated in the terms <strong>of</strong> the number <strong>of</strong> British Thermal Units<br />

purchased for one cent based on guaranteed analysis. A continuous check is maintained<br />

to insure compliance with specifications. The United Electric Coal Company,<br />

Bell and Zoller Coal Company, and Republic Coal and Coke Company are the<br />

lowest bidders. It is advantageous to have contracts with three sources <strong>of</strong> supply<br />

to be assured <strong>of</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> coal at all times.<br />

A two-year contract is being recommended to enable the mines better to plan<br />

future operations, development, and expansion, and to assure the L T niversity <strong>of</strong> a<br />

continued reliable source <strong>of</strong> supply.<br />

The prices quoted are based on present wage scales and are subject to increase<br />

or decrease in event that wage contracts now in effect are changed. Any such<br />

change will affect the price to the extent that production costs are increased or
