The first <strong>of</strong> the achievement awards to be known as the "Alumni Achievement<br />

Award" will be made at the commencement exercises on June 15, 1957, to Clifford<br />

F. Hood, Class <strong>of</strong> 1915, President <strong>of</strong> the United States Steel Corporation; William<br />

E. Levis, Class <strong>of</strong> 1913, Retired Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Owen-Illinois Glass Company;<br />

Charles B. Shuman, Class <strong>of</strong> 1928, President <strong>of</strong> the American Farm Bureau<br />

Federation.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Holt, this program was approved.<br />

MEN'S RESIDENCE HALLS REVENUE BONDS OF 19S7<br />

(10) The Vice-President and Comptroller recommends the adoption <strong>of</strong> the following<br />

resolution, and I concur.<br />

Resolved, that the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Illinois hereby<br />

ratifies all acts, conditions, and things done at the meetings <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Trustees held on January 16, 1957, February 14, 1957, March 12, 1957, and at all<br />

other meetings during the period from January 1, 1956, up to the present date, and<br />

also ratifies all acts done and performed by the <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>of</strong> said Board all in connection<br />

with the issuance <strong>of</strong> $6,750,000 Men's Residence Halls Revenue Bonds <strong>of</strong><br />

1957 <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Illinois dated April 1, 1957.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Swain, the foregoing resolution was adopted.<br />

SPECIAL APPROPRIATIONS FOR NONRECURRING EXPENDITURES<br />

(11) The Committee on Nonrecurring Appropriations recommends assignments<br />

<strong>of</strong> funds from the General Reserve for the following purposes:<br />

1. College <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, remodeling in the Old Agronomy Storehouse. .$ 15 000<br />

2. Chicago Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Colleges, purchase <strong>of</strong> forty-five microscopes for<br />

microscope rental pool 13 750<br />

3. College <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts and Sciences, Department <strong>of</strong> Speech, air conditioning<br />

and lighting in Illini Hall I 295<br />

4. School <strong>of</strong> Journalism and Communications, repair and rebuilding <strong>of</strong><br />

television cameras 3 600<br />

5. Library, acquisition <strong>of</strong> books 15 000<br />

6. Physical Plant Department, air conditioning in the Administration<br />

Building 31 400<br />

7. College <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, alterations in Mumford Hall 9 000<br />

8. Armed Forces, Department <strong>of</strong> Air Science, expansion <strong>of</strong> supply<br />

facilities 5 000<br />

9. College <strong>of</strong> Fine and Applied Arts, Department <strong>of</strong> Art, purchase <strong>of</strong><br />

equipment 3 770<br />

10. College <strong>of</strong> Engineering, conversion <strong>of</strong> attic space in Ceramics Building<br />

to laboratories 4 720<br />

11. College <strong>of</strong> Engineering, Department <strong>of</strong> General Engineering, improved<br />

lighting and purchase <strong>of</strong> drawing tables 4 500<br />

12. College <strong>of</strong> Engineering, Department <strong>of</strong> Mechanical Engineering, expansion<br />

<strong>of</strong> laboratory facilities 5 600<br />

13. College <strong>of</strong> Fine and Applied Arts, dedication <strong>of</strong> new Band Building.. 4 000<br />

14. Physical Plant Department, comprehensive traffic study 9 000<br />

Total $125 635<br />

The Committee further recommends that assignments for Items 1-6, inclusive,<br />

be made from the funds available in 1956-57, and that assignments for Items 7- J 4.<br />

inclusive, be made from funds in 1957-58 if funds are not available in the 1956-57<br />

General Reserve.<br />

I concur.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Johnston, these appropriations were made by the<br />

following vote: Aye, Mr. Herrick, Mrs. Holt, Mr. Johnston, Mr.<br />

Livingston, Mr. Swain, Mrs. Watkins; no, none; absent, Mr. Bissell,<br />

Mr. Hughes, Mr. Nickell, Mr. Stratton, Mr. Williamson.<br />

SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATIONS<br />

(12) The amounts appropriated for wages, expense, and equipment in several<br />

departments for the year 1956-57 have proved inadequate. The Vice-President and
