After the disability benefits described above have been exhausted, a member<br />

may be granted a disability leave without pay from the University. If such<br />

a member is a participant in the University Retirement System <strong>of</strong> Illinois,<br />

he may apply for the benefits to which he is entitled under that system.<br />

(d) Death, Disability, and Survivor Benefits. For employees <strong>of</strong> the University,<br />

other than students paid on an hourly basis and personnel whose<br />

principal employment is outside the University, with at least six months' service,<br />

who are not participants in the University Retirement System or anyother<br />

publicly supported retirement system which pays a death benefit, a<br />

death benefit <strong>of</strong> $500 is payable by the University. For employees who are<br />

participants in the University Retirement System, death, disability, and<br />

survivor benefits are provided by that system.<br />

REGISTRATION OF STAFF MEMBERS IN UNIVERSITY CLASSES<br />

Sec. 30. (a) Persons on the academic, administrative, or permanent nonacademic<br />

staff <strong>of</strong> the University, or on the staffs <strong>of</strong> the allied surveys and<br />

laboratories located on the Urbana-Champaign campus, may register in University<br />

courses for which they are eligible for admission, without payment<br />

<strong>of</strong> the tuition fee and the laboratory, library, and supply fee, provided that<br />

their annual salary for nine months is less than the minimum salary for such<br />

period established for full-time assistants.<br />

(b) For persons on other than a nine months' appointment, the exemption<br />

limit shall be adjusted proportionately, and if for periods <strong>of</strong> less than nine<br />

months, the exemption shall apply if compensation is less than the rate paid<br />

to full-time assistants at the minimum salary.<br />

(c) Permanent nonacademic employees without regard to salary may also<br />

register without payment <strong>of</strong> any fees or deposits in:<br />

(1) Any regular University courses in which the employee is requested<br />

by his department, with the concurrence <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong> Nonacademic<br />

Personnel, to enroll for the improvement <strong>of</strong> the employee's present work.<br />

(2) Any special course looking toward improving University service organized<br />

at the request <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong> Nonacademic Personnel in cooperation<br />

with the teaching staff, the employee, and his department.<br />

(d) The exemption from fees, as provided above, shall apply to graduate<br />

scholars and fellows whose stipends are paid from general appropriations <strong>of</strong><br />

the University, but not to fellows whose stipends are paid from grants or<br />

contract funds received by the University from outside sponsors <strong>of</strong> graduate<br />

study and research.<br />

(e) Persons on appointment for a first and second semester or a second<br />

semester who are exempt from payment <strong>of</strong> fees for courses in which they<br />

are registered during the period <strong>of</strong> their appointment are exempt also from a<br />

payment <strong>of</strong> fees for courses in which they enroll in the Summer Session immediately<br />

following termination <strong>of</strong> their appointments, regardless <strong>of</strong> whether<br />

or not they are teaching in that Summer Session.<br />

ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEES<br />

Sec. 31. The President <strong>of</strong> the University is authorized to appoint such<br />

administrative and other committees or boards as are necessary to assist him
