1. Here are the data on the fac<strong>to</strong>ry industry <strong>of</strong> European Russia<br />

in the post-Reform era that we have been able <strong>to</strong> find in <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

publications such as: Statistical Chronicle <strong>of</strong> the Russian Empire, St.<br />

Petersburg, 1866. I.—Returns and Material <strong>of</strong> the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Finance,<br />

1866, No. 4, April, and 1867, No. 6, June.—The Ministry <strong>of</strong> Finance<br />

Yearbook, <strong>Vol</strong>s. I, VIII, X and XII.—Collection <strong>of</strong> Data on Fac<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

Industry in Russia, published by Department <strong>of</strong> Commerce and<br />

Manufacture for 1885-1891. All these data are drawn from one and the<br />

same source, namely, the reports supplied by owners <strong>of</strong> fac<strong>to</strong>ries and<br />

works <strong>to</strong> the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Finance. The significance <strong>of</strong> these data and<br />

their values are dealt with in detail in the text.<br />

2. The 34 trades for which data are given lor 1864-1879 and 1885-<br />

1890 are the following: cot<strong>to</strong>n-spinning; cot<strong>to</strong>n-weaving; flax-spinning;<br />

calico-printing; hemp-spinning and rope-making; wool-spinning;<br />

cloth; wool-weaving; silk-weaving and ribbon; brocade, galloon;<br />

gold-spinning and metal-beating; knitted wear; dyeing; finishing;<br />

oil-pro<strong>of</strong>ing and varnishing; stationery; wall-paper; rubber; chemical<br />

and dye; cosmetic; vinegar; mineral-water; match; sealing-wax and<br />

varnish; leather, suede and morocco; glue; stearin; soap and tallowcandle;<br />

wax-candle; glass, crystal and mirror; porcelain and faience;<br />

machine-building; iron-founding; copper and bronze; wire, nail, and<br />

some small metal wares.
