Recovering the PastWhile the world was recovering from the OblivAeonEvent, the man known as Proletariat wanderedRussia, trying to chart a new path for himself. Yearsof fighting for the ideals of a nation that no longerexisted left the super-soldier with no place in thisworld. He searched old Soviet buildings, hoping tofind motivation in the investigation of the culturethat had created him. His travels brought him toan abandoned facility built to research the samecrystal that had created him, but radiation therecaused him to duplicate rapidly and uncontrollably,his mind reducing with each duplication. The crystalwas apparently still here, and its radiation hadrestarted the reactor, building towards a meltdown!Worse still, the hero Fanatic was drawn to thedisturbance. Still in mourning over the loss of herfellow hero Ra, she let loose her rage upon thehordes of Proletariats, inadvertently creating moretwisted clones with each swing of her dark sword. Itwas only through the intervention of the FreedomFive that Alexandr was reformed and disaster wasaverted. Despondent and further embittered, hecontinued his search.After months of fruitlessly searching, Alexandrfound a secret door to a heavily reinforced bunkerin a decommissioned missile silo. Inside, was a singlesteel cylinder, slightly smaller than a coffin. Openingthe cylinder, he found himself face to face withJoseph Stalin, or at least some of the face. Oneeye was missing and a visible half of the brain wasmachinery, suspended in a glowing blue liquid. AsAlexandr’s breath caught in his throat, machinerywhirred to life, covering the exposed brain with ametal plate, and replaced the missing eye with ared lens. After a brief whir of activity, the single eyeopened and the red lens lit from within. Recessedpanels in the wall opened and robotic assemblerarms swiftly built a mismatched body. When it wascomplete, the liquid in the tank drained and thehead began to speak. It addressed Alexandr byname and spoke of authorizing the project thathad created him. The manipulators raised the headhigh and placed it on the new body. The voice ofStalin spoke of Soviet scientists who failed to savehis body but kept his mind alive. He spoke of theorder from the Kremlin that had forced him intohibernation as his successor shut down the project,but how he erased the existence of his bunkerfrom the records before they could destroy him.It claimed to remember being Joseph Stalin. Now,he would be known as Mecha-Stalin, and he wouldnot rest until the Soviet Union was restored. Heoffered Proletariat a role in the restoration. Hegave him purpose.ConsolidationTogether, Proletariat and Mecha-Stalin collectedallies. Mecha-Stalin had unlimited access toarchived Soviet secrets and retrieved sleeperagent activation codes, which he began to transmitaround the world. Only one agent responded:Pavel Vladislavovich Koslovski, the last survivor ofthe elite covert team that had gone to ground withthe order to keep ready until called. Though old,he was dedicated and gave his sniping skills to thecause. Mecha-Stalin also drew in a new firebrandof an ally: Barrikada Dmitriyevna Petrov, daughterof the infamous Iron Curtain. Mecha-Stalin gavethe angry young woman a cause to live for, andmore importantly, to fight for. He knew just howto appeal to her desire for a challenge. Nowtogether, these powerful allies formed the core ofPerestroika, a team dedicated to bringing back anew Soviet Union.Cold WarPerestroika began their first plot in the UnitedStates city of Megalopolis. The reconstruction afterOblivAeon had left many people dispossessed,and Mecha-Stalin recruited those who felt thatthey had been abandoned. Knowing that he wouldneed more than a mob, Mecha-Stalin used everyresource at his command and steadily accruedfollowers and technology in a hidden base beneaththe city, waiting for the right time to strike.After weeks of inciting crime waves to destabilizethe city, laying the groundwork for Perestroika toemerge as a stabilizing savior, Mecha-Stalin’s planswere cut short by the Sentinels of Freedom. Rushedinto conflict, he made a desperate push to establisha power base, but the forces at his disposal werenot up to the task of stopping the heroes. In theend, Mecha-Stalin put his ramshackle body on theline alongside Perestroika as the heroes stormed hisbase. When he was defeated, he chose to destroyhimself and the base rather than surrender.New Soviet EraMonths later, Mecha-Stalin reappeared in Russiawith an upgraded body, access to incrediblyadvanced technology, and a new base establishedin Siberia. After freeing and recovering the othermembers of Perestroika, they began to launch raidsaround Russia to begin their great mission oncemore.
