1. Class Participation and quizzes will be taken into consi<strong>de</strong>ration in bor<strong>de</strong>rline cases. This credit will be given for class participation either oral<br />

or written. Even those who don’t come to class will be able to participate with written comments on the readings and class notes.<br />

Should you feel that your exam hasn’t been gra<strong>de</strong>d accurately, please write down your reasons and submit th to me or ask for an appointment<br />

to see the exam. We will sit down and discuss the exam.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

The course consi<strong>de</strong>rs the emergence and the formal <strong>de</strong>velopment of twentieth century American poetry and the philosophical matrix that lies at<br />

the foundation of a new poetic language. It centers on the poetics of mo<strong>de</strong>rnism and contemporary poetry. Primary attention is given to its major representatives:<br />

Robert Frost, H.D., e.e. cummings, Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, Williams Carlos Williams. It also inclu<strong>de</strong>s a study of contemporary<br />

poets like: Allen Ginsberg, Theodore Roethke, John Berryman, Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Robert Creeley, Frank O’Hara, John<br />

Ashbery…You will learn various ways of talking about a writer’s imaginative and technical concerns; avant-gar<strong>de</strong> strategies and the philosophical perspective<br />

of mo<strong>de</strong>rnism. You will know a great number of poems that are relevant reference points in English poetry.<br />

GRADING & EXAM & PAPER<br />

Assessment will be by final exam. Class performance is extremely important, and it will consi<strong>de</strong>rably affect your gra<strong>de</strong>. Intensive oral analysis<br />

and stu<strong>de</strong>nts’ frequent interventions in class <strong>de</strong>bates are highly appreciated. Various written assignments are expected.
