- Revision of the most important phonetic, lexical and semantic processes.<br />

- Practical exercises related to the contents of the syllabus:<br />

- Spelling and phonological patterns of change from ME (< OE) to PdE.<br />

- Exercises on the Great Vowel Shift.<br />

- I<strong>de</strong>ntification of dialectal characteristics in different texts.<br />

- Translation of a variety of representative texts of the Middle English period: fragments from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Owl and<br />

the Nightingale, Ancrene Wisse, Ayenbite of Inwyt, from Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, Shakespeare as an example of Mo<strong>de</strong>rn English.<br />

- Analysis of the Middle English texts previously translated from a phonological and semantical perspectives.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

This is a thorough survey of American literature from the time of English colonization to the end of the nineteenth century. Our class discussions<br />

will focus on close analysis of texts (fiction, poetry, essays, autobiography, letters, sermons,…), while lectures will introduce individual authors and<br />

survey relevant historical issues and cultural movements.<br />
