AIMS OF THE COURSE
The aim of the course is to explore the nature of autobiography, and to address the presence of autobiographical forms from the earliest accounts
to postmodern manifestations of the genre.
COURSE WORK AND EVALUATION
Class time will be divided into theoretical hours, mainly dealing with the backgrounds of the readings discussed, and practical ones in which the
lecturer will provide themes for discussion in each unit. Several movies such Memento or Beloved will be shown.
EVALUATION
A. For students attending classes:
a. Tasks: Short essays to be presented in class (2-3 pages double spaced)
1. First paragraphs of your autobiography
2. Photography and biography
3. Where is autobiography: examples
4. Different autobiographical accounts:
a) You are arrested by the police
b) Before a psychiatrist
c) Before a man/woman you like a lot
5. Apply autobiographical theory to your autobiography
6. Choose an autobiographical literary model and describe why it is the most suitable to your experience.
7. Communal autobiography
8. Afterthoughts: questions for further discussion. Texts for further reading
b. Interview
Please note: not handing in the written work at the assigned time will immediately place you in group B. Please note that if you fail
your interview you CANNOT take the exam in May—you can, however, take it in June.
B. For students NOT attending classes (Students who have missed more than 3 classes):
Final exam: Students will have to identify texts taken from the set readings for the course, as well as answer questions related to them.
Student Participation: students are encouraged and required to participate in class discussions.
Please note: The ability to communicate and write in English is essential for this course and will determine your final grade. Students
will be required to carry out their own autobiographical experiments in the creation of fictional autobiographies.
