AIMS OF THE COURSE<br />

The aim of the course is to explore the nature of autobiography, and to address the presence of autobiographical forms from the earliest accounts<br />

to postmo<strong>de</strong>rn manifestations of the genre.<br />

COURSE WORK AND EVALUATION<br />

Class time will be divi<strong>de</strong>d into theoretical hours, mainly <strong>de</strong>aling with the backgrounds of the readings discussed, and practical ones in which the<br />

lecturer will provi<strong>de</strong> themes for discussion in each unit. Several movies such Memento or Beloved will be shown.<br />

EVALUATION<br />

A. For stu<strong>de</strong>nts attending classes:<br />

a. Tasks: Short essays to be presented in class (2-3 pages double spaced)<br />

1. First paragraphs of your autobiography<br />

2. Photography and biography<br />

3. Where is autobiography: examples<br />

4. Different autobiographical accounts:<br />

a) You are arrested by the police<br />

b) Before a psychiatrist<br />

c) Before a man/woman you like a lot<br />

5. Apply autobiographical theory to your autobiography<br />

6. Choose an autobiographical literary mo<strong>de</strong>l and <strong>de</strong>scribe why it is the most suitable to your experience.<br />

7. Communal autobiography<br />

8. Afterthoughts: questions for further discussion. Texts for further reading<br />

b. Interview<br />

Please note: not handing in the written work at the assigned time will immediately place you in group B. Please note that if you fail<br />

your interview you CANNOT take the exam in May—you can, however, take it in June.<br />

B. For stu<strong>de</strong>nts NOT attending classes (Stu<strong>de</strong>nts who have missed more than 3 classes):<br />

Final exam: Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will have to i<strong>de</strong>ntify texts taken from the set readings for the course, as well as answer questions related to them.<br />

Stu<strong>de</strong>nt Participation: stu<strong>de</strong>nts are encouraged and required to participate in class discussions.<br />

Please note: The ability to communicate and write in English is essential for this course and will <strong>de</strong>termine your final gra<strong>de</strong>. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />

will be required to carry out their own autobiographical experiments in the creation of fictional autobiographies.
