« La distance est une trajectoire intérieure.
» Tel est le constat auquel aboutit
la réalisatrice au cours de son récit
en forme de retour sur soi, qui traverse
le Pérou, les Etats-Unis et la Suisse. Il
est long, le chemin emprunté par les
femmes de sa famille, pour s’émanciper
du modèle patriarcal transmis de génération
en génération. Il est sinueux, son
propre parcours, balloté des deux côtés
de l’Atlantique, d’une culture à l’autre.
Quelques vieilles VHS font office de
repère : « Je mesurais l’écart entre ce
monde où j’avais grandi et la femme que
je suis devenue au fil de mes aller-retour
migratoires» (KR). Ici, l’introspection
passe par le dialogue et par une suite
de savoureuses conversations, finement
mises en scène, avec mère, tante, grandmère
et petite cousine. Et tout naturellement,
c’est dans l’humour et la proximité
– des corps, du cadre – que la cinéaste
trouve la bonne distance. Un film léger
et profond, à la verve latine, réjouissante
‘telenovela’ documentaire, où la parole
des femmes se libère en l’absence
des hommes, mais où les hommes…
occupent toutes les discussions.
«Entfernung ist ein im Inneren zurückgelegter
Weg». Zu dieser Feststellung
gelangt die Regisseurin im Verlauf ihrer
als Selbstbetrachtung strukturierten
Erzählung, die sich in Peru, den USA und
der Schweiz abspielt. Der Weg, den die
Frauen ihrer Familie für die Befreiung
von dem generationsübergreifenden
patriarchalischen Modell eingeschlagen
haben, ist lang. Auch ihr eigener,
auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks und zwischen
den Kulturen verlaufender Weg
ist kurvenreich. Ein paar alte Videokassetten
sind der Anhaltspunkt: «Den
Abstand zwischen der Welt, in der ich
aufwuchs, und der Frau, die ich geworden
bin, mass ich im Laufe meiner Migrationen»
(KR). Die Introspektion findet
hier als Dialog und in einer Abfolge
gekonnt inszenierter, köstlicher Dialoge
mit Mutter, Tante, Grossmutter und der
kleinen Cousine statt. Und ganz natürlich
findet die Regisseurin in Humor und
Nähe (der Körper und der Einstellungen)
die richtige Distanz. Ein leichter, tiefer
Film mit lateinamerikanischem Schwung
und eine fröhliche Doku-’Telenovela’, wo
sich die Zungen der Frauen in Abwesenheit
der Männer lösen… und die Männer
trotzdem alle Gespräche beherrschen.
“Distance is an inner journey.” Such
is the finding that the director makes
through her self-reflective account,
which crosses Peru, the United States
and Switzerland. The path taken by the
women in her family in liberating themselves
from the patriarchal model transmitted
from generation to generation is
a long one. Her own course is meandering,
tossed between two sides of the
Atlantic, from one culture to another.
Some old VHS cassettes serve as reference
points: “I was measuring the gap
between the world I grew up in and the
woman I have become over the course
of my migratory movements” (KR).
Here introspection involves dialogue
and a series of charming conversations,
finely dramatized, with her mother, aunt,
grandmother and younger cousin. And it
is, quite naturally, in humour and closeness
– to the bodies, to the frame – that
the filmmaker finds the right distance.
A gentle yet profound film, with Latin
panache, a delight documentary soap in
which the voice of women frees itself in
the absence of men, but in which men
are the focus of every discussion.
