Chaque année à Amsterdam, une quinzaine
de personnes meurent dans le
plus complet abandon. Les funérailles
sont assurées par les services communaux,
mais une association de poètes y
met les formes en déclamant des vers
composés pour l’occasion. Objet hybride
dont il ne reste plus que des indices ;
d’une société indifférente. Comme porté
par leur esprit, le film délaisse parfois
la chronique pour construire sa propre
poésie. Des fragments amateur, projetés
dans l’appartement du défunt anonyme,
lui redonnent un visage et une histoire,
fût-elle archétypale, et le replacent
symboliquement dans la communauté
qui l’avait exclu, via l’imagerie collective
des ‘found footage’. L’oraison funèbre
devient ode à la vie.
In Amsterdam sterben jedes Jahr
nahezu fünfzehn Menschen in vollkommener
Einsamkeit. Die Beerdigung
übernehmen die Gemeinden, den
Rahmen jedoch bildet eine Dichtervereinigung,
die eigens verfasste Verse liest.
Poule des Doods – ein suggestives Hybrid-Objekt
– bedient sich als Herangehensweise
an die Verwaltung des Todes
durch Beamte, die surrealistische Farce
dieser Beerdigungen und die Schwierigkeit,
über ein so ungewöhnliches Thema
zu schreiben, einer Verschachtelung der
Stil- und Erzählebenen. Denn diesen
humanistischen Poeten, die ihren Artgenossen
‘post-mortem’ etwas Würde
zuteilwerden lassen möchten, geht es
vor allem darum, einem Manko beizukommen:
einer lückenhaften, nur noch
in Spuren erhaltenen Identität; einer
gleichgültigen Gesellschaft. Wie von
ihrem Geist getragen, vernachlässigt
der Film zuweilen die Chronik und lässt
seine eigene Poesie entstehen. In die
Wohnung des anonymen Verstorbenen
projizierte Amateurfilmfragmente geben
ihm ein Gesicht und eine – sei sie archetypische
– Geschichte zurück, und gliedern
ihn mittels einer kollektiven ‘found
footage’-Bildgebung symbolisch wieder
in jene Gesellschaft ein, die ihn ausgestossen
hatte. Die Grabrede wird zu einer
Ode an das Leben.
In Amsterdam, around fifteen people die
completely alone each year. The funerals
are organised by municipal services, but
an association of poets respects conventions
by reciting poems written for
the occasion. A hybrid and suggestive
object, Poule des Doods interlocks storytelling
styles and stages to broach civil
servants’ handling of death, the surreal
farce of these funerals, or the difficulty
of writing about such a singular subject.
For these humanist poets, devoted to
returning a semblance of dignity in death
to their fellow humans, it is, above all, a
matter of remedying the shortcomings
of an incomplete identity, mere clues of
which remain, and the indifference of
society. As if carried along by their spirit,
the film at times forsakes the chronicle
to write its own poetry. Amateur extracts,
screened in the flat of the anonymous
deceased, give him back a face, a history,
even an archetypal one and, through
the collective imagery of ‘found footage’,
symbolically replace him in the community
that had marginalised him. The
funeral oration becomes an ode to life.
