Un ferry plein à craquer faisait régulièrement
la navette entre Druya (Biélorussie)
et Piedruja (Lettonie), qu’importaient la
saison et les conditions climatiques et
hydrauliques. Il reliait deux parties d’une
même communauté: il transportait des
enfants, des adultes, des personnes
âgées, des voitures et des chevaux.
Aujourd’hui, une frontière sépare deux
Etats indépendants, sans que l’on ne
puisse plus voir qui que ce soit passer
la frontière. Que se passe-t-il quand le
ferry cesse de traverser les eaux Rien.
Il ne se passe plus rien. On ne peut y voir
qu’un soldat seul et immobile. « La vie n’a
rien à voir avec les mots. Quand on dit
officiellement ‘la frontière est établie’,
on n’imagine pas vraiment comment
cela se passe. Mais pour beaucoup de
personnes, cela fait partie du quotidien.
Et, cela change tout. C’est pourquoi j’ai
voulu faire un film plutôt que d’utiliser
des mots pour me rapprocher le plus
possible de la vérité.» (LP)
Einst verkehrte eine mit Menschen
vollgepackte Fähre zwischen Druya
(Belarus) und Piedruja (Lettland). Ungeachtet
der Jahreszeit, des Wetters oder
des Seegangs. Sie verband die beiden
Teile einer Gemeinschaft, sie beförderte
Kinder, Erwachsene, alte Menschen,
Autos und Pferde. Jetzt liegt eine
Grenze zwischen zwei unabhängigen
Staaten, ein Überqueren der Grenze
wird hier jedoch nicht erwogen. Was
geschieht, wenn die Fähre nicht mehr
über das Wasser fährt Nichts – es
geschieht nichts mehr. Übrig ist dort
nur ein Soldat, und er bewegt sich nicht.
«Das Leben ist anders als Worte. Unter
der Aussage ‘Die Grenze wurde eingerichtet’
kann man sich nicht wirklich vorstellen,
wie das tatsächlich abläuft. Aber
für viele Menschen ist dies ein Vorgang,
der ihren Alltag prägt. Und der alles verändert.
Um der Wahrheit so nahe wie
möglich zu kommen, mache ich einen
Film, anstatt Worte zu verwenden.» (LP)
A ferry full of people used to go back
and forth between Druya (Belarus) and
Piedruja (Latvia). No matter the season,
the weather or water conditions. It connected
two parts of one community; it
moved children, adults, elderly people,
cars and horses. Now there is a border
between two independent states, but no
border crossing is contemplated here.
What happens when the ferry no longer
crosses the water Nothing, nothing
happens anymore. There is just a soldier
left there, and he is not moving. “Life is
different from words. When you officially
say: ‘The border is established’, you don’t
really imagine how it actually happens.
But for many people it is a process of
everyday life. However, it changes everything.
Therefore in order to come as
close to the truth as possible, I am making
a film instead of using words.” (LP)
