Dans une maison cubaine vétuste et
emplie de souvenirs, un homme, sa fille
et son petit-fils cohabitent. Le grandpère
qui n’a de cesse d’éduquer et d’aimer
le petit garçon témoigne toutefois
d’une certaine fatigue, et découvre – ou
peut-être préfère-t-il ne pas le voir –
qu’une maladie respiratoire chronique
menace ses jours. Travaillant minutieusement
des atmosphères claires-obscures,
Escenas Previas observe avec
calme le quotidien fait de petits riens
de ses trois protagonistes, ponctué des
visites de quelques proches. Se tenant
éloignés de la dimension pathétique ou
dramatique que cette situation pourrait
engendrer, père et fille, au contraire,
défient la souffrance à venir en recourant
à la légéreté et à l’ironie. Restent
des conversations ayant trait à la mort
ou aux funérailles, la chèvre que l’on
abat, et les ballons que le vieil homme
gonfle pour exercer sa respiration,
comme autant de présages et symboles
possibles d’un ultime voyage. Un portrait
délicat, bercé de nostalgie. Que faire du

In einem alten kubanischen Haus voller
Erinnerungen leben ein Mann, seine
Tochter und sein Enkel zusammen. Der
Grossvater, der seinen Enkel liebt und
ständig an seiner Erziehung beteiligt ist,
zeigt Spuren einer gewissen Müdigkeit
und entdeckt – oder zieht es vielleicht
vor es nicht zu sehen – dass eine chronische
Atemwegerkrankung sein Leben
bedroht. Escenas Previas beobachtet in
einer feinen Abfolge von Hell-Dunkel-
Stimmungen den aus kleinen Nebensächlichkeiten
und dem Besuch von
Verwandten bestehenden Alltag seiner
drei Protagonisten. Vater und Tochter
halten die pathetische oder dramatische
Dimension fern, die diese Situation mit
sich bringen könnte und bemühen sich
im Gegenteil, dem kommenden Leiden
mit Leichtigkeit und Ironie zu begegnen.
Bleiben als gleichzeitig mögliche Vorzeichen
und Symbole einer letzten Reise
die Gespräche über den Tod oder die
Beerdigung, die geschlachtete Ziege
und die Luftballons, die der alte Mann
aufbläst, um seine Atmung zu trainieren.
Ein zartes Porträt voller Nostalgie: Was
tun mit der verbleibenden Zeit
A man, his daughter and grandson live
together in a dilapidated Cuban house
filled with memories. However, the
grandfather, who has never stopped
raising and loving the little boy, experiences
a certain tiredness and discovers
– or perhaps prefers not to see – that
his days are numbered due to a chronic
illness. Meticulously working with chiaroscuro
atmospheres, Escenas Previas
calmly observes the minutiae of the daily
lives of its three protagonists, punctuated
by visits from family. Keeping clear of
the moving or dramatic dimensions that
this situation could cause, the father and
daughter instead use frivolity and irony to
defy the coming suffering. What remains
are conversations concerning death and
funerals, the goat that is put down, and
the balloons the old man blows up to
train his breathing, like signs and possible
symbols of a final journey. A delicate
portrait, soothed by nostalgia – what do
you do with the time you have left
