François et Jean aiment se retrouver
dans un décor d’avant la civilisation. Les
gorges et les à-pics sont leurs terrains
de chasse favoris, eux qui frayent au
milieu de la roche et des maquis, insatiables
chercheurs de ‘shoot’ avec pour
seuls bagages des dizaines de mètres
de corde, des mousquetons, du talc et
leurs corps élancés. Le rituel que filme
Jean-Claude Cottet semble immuable.
Les grimpeurs s’échauffent sur quelques
parois verticales, s’assurent, s’encouragent,
se mesurent également dans une
montée progressive d’adrénaline et de
peur, « au bord du vide ». Les mots sont
rares ou, quand il s’agit de réviser une
ascension, s’enchaînent dans un sabir
technique digne d’une société secrète.
Le cinéaste suit ses protagonistes pendant
un parcours sur les hauteurs escarpées
du Verdon, progresse avec eux sur
le fil ténu de leur étrange relation, qui
consiste à jouer avec les périls qu’offre
la nature. Avec pour seuls baudrier et
corde, sa caméra, Cottet construit un
véritable ‘ride’ documentaire captivant et
ambigu avec un duo de funambules qui
semble jouir de la chute plutôt que du
sentiment de domination qui s’empare
de ceux qui atteignent le sommet.
François und Jean begeben sich
gerne in vorzivilisatorische Landschaften.
Schluchten und Steilwände sind
das bevorzugte Jagdgebiet der beiden
unersättlichen, durch Fels und Buschwald
pflügenden Sucher nach dem
‘Shoot’, die als einziges Gepäck Dutzende
Meter Seil, Karabiner, Talk und ihre
schlanken Körper dabei haben. Das
von Jean-Claude Cottet gefilmte Ritual
scheint unabänderlich. Die Kletterer
machen sich an einigen Steilwänden
warm, sichern sich, ermutigen sich und
messen sich «am Rande des Abgrunds»
miteinander, während Adrenalin und
Angst langsam steigen. Geredet wird
wenig. Und wenn einmal ein Aufstieg zu
besprechen ist, dann geschieht dies in
einem Jargon, der eine Geheimgesellschaft
vermuten lässt. Der Filmemacher
folgt seinen Helden während eines Parcours
durch die zerklüfteten Höhen des
Verdon und wandelt mit ihnen auf dem
schmalen Grat ihrer seltsamen Beziehung,
die daraus besteht, mit den Gefahren
der Natur zu spielen. Cottet hat als
Klettergurt und Seil nur seine Kamera
und baut einen fesselnden, ambivalenten
Doku-‘Ride’ mit diesem Duo auf,
das mehr Freude am Fallen als an dem
Gefühl der Überlegenheit zu haben
scheint, das jene befällt, die den Gipfel
erreicht haben.
François and Jean enjoy being in precivilisation
scenery. Precipitous gorges
are their favourite hunting ground; they
make their way through among the
rocks and undergrowth, insatiable thrill
seekers carrying nothing but metres of
ropes, carabiners, talc and their own willowy
bodies. The ritual filmed by Jean-
Claude Cottet appears immutable. The
climbers warm up on some vertical surfaces,
check and encourage each other
and compete against each other as
adrenaline and fear gradually increase
“on the edge” of the void. There are few
words and, when it comes to reviewing a
climb, they are strung together in technical
mumbo-jumbo worthy of a secret
society. The filmmaker followed the protagonists
on a route through the craggy
peaks of the Verdon Gorge, walking with
them along the high wire of their strange
relationship, which consists of playing
with nature’s perils. With only his camera
as rope and harness, Cottet creates
a visceral thrill ride of a documentary,
which is both captivating and ambiguous,
with a pair of tightrope walkers
who seem to enjoy the fall rather than
the sense of domination that overcomes
those who reach the summit.
