Maria, une femme âgée, se meurt dans
son lit. Mais elle n’est pas seule. Autour
d’elle, d’autres femmes surveillent
attentivement son dernier souffle, en
essayant de lui apporter tout ce dont
elle pourrait avoir besoin. Elles l’aident
à se relever ou à ajuster l’oreiller sous
sa tête. Ces femmes parlent entre elles
et évoquent des histoires qui ont marqué
l’existence de Maria. Certaines
sont drôles, d’autres non. Elles nous
font comprendre comment Maria a
influencé la vie de la plupart des personnes
présentes qui l’accompagnent
dans ses dernières heures. Le réalisateur
s’intègre avec circonspection dans
cet espace pour tenter de capturer sur
son téléphone portable les dernières
images d’une femme qu’il a aimée. Cet
équilibre prudemment recherché entre
l’acte de filmer et la participation à un
rituel archaïque, qui est aussi un adieu
sincère, est ce qui donne toute l’intimité
à la texture du film. Il y a la tentative
d’être présent, tout en participant
à cette prière collective avec les outils
et le savoir-faire du cinéma. Pendant ce
temps, la vie continue, certaines dames
pouffent de rire, d’autres rentrent tout
simplement chez elles. Maria est un
témoignage des forces les plus vivaces
de l’existence.
Maria, eine alte Frau, stirbt in ihrem Bett.
Aber sie ist nicht alleine. Um sie herum
sitzen andere Frauen, die während ihrer
letzten Atemzüge bei ihr sind und versuchen,
ihr alles zu geben, was sie braucht.
Sie helfen ihr, sich im Bett aufzurichten
oder das Kissen unter ihrem Kopf anzupassen.
Die Frauen sprechen miteinander
und erinnern sich an Geschichten
aus Marias Leben. Manche sind lustig,
manche nicht. Sie zeigen, wie Maria das
Leben der meisten Menschen, die in
ihren letzten Stunden bei ihr sind, berührt
hat. Der Regisseur tritt behutsam ins
Bild, um die letzten Bilder einer Frau, die
er geliebt hat, mit seinem Mobiltelefon
festzuhalten. Die Intimität der Struktur
des Films entsteht aus diesem vorsichtig
gesuchten Gleichgewicht zwischen
dem Akt des Filmens und der gleichzeitigen
Teilnahme an einem archaischen
Ritual, einem von Herzen kommenden
Lebewohl. Es gibt ein Bestreben, da zu
sein und gleichzeitig an diesem gemeinsamen
Gebet mit den Werkzeugen und
dem Handwerk des Filmemachens teilzuhaben.
Und während all dies vonstatten
geht, geht auch das Leben weiter,
und einige Damen lachen oder müssen
ganz einfach nach Hause gehen. Maria
ist ein Zeugnis der unverwüstlichen
Stärke des Lebens.
Maria, an elderly woman, is dying in
her bed. But she is not alone. Around
her sit other women watching carefully
over her last breath, trying to provide
her with whatever she might need.
They help her lift from the bed or adjust
the pillow under her head. The women
talk to each other, recalling stories from
Maria’s life. Some are funny, some are
not. They make us understand how
Maria has touched the lives of most of
the people that are sitting around her
in her very last hours. The director fits
carefully in the frame trying to capture
the last images on his mobile phone of a
woman he loved. This cautiously sought
balance between the act of filming while
participating in an archaic ritual which
is a heartfelt farewell as well, is what
makes the intimacy of the film’s texture.
There is the attempt to be there and at
the same time to participate in this collective
prayer with the tools and craft of
filmmaking. While all this is going on, life
as well continues as some of the ladies
start to giggle or simply have to leave
and go home. Maria is a testimony to
life’s most enduring strengths.
