L’île de Valaam se trouve au nord de la
Russie, dans la République de Carélie.
Elle tire son nom du mot finno-ougrien
‘valamo‘ qui signifie ‘haute terre des
montagnes’. Elle fait partie d’un archipel
situé dans la partie nord du plus grand
lac européen, le lac Ladoga. L’île est
habitée en permanence par une petite
communauté de quelques 600 personnes,
formée de moines et de leurs
familles. Le monastère orthodoxe stauropégique
de Valaam est un centre spirituel
qui conserve une tradition de chant
unique (les chants de Valaam) inspirée
des chants byzantin et znamenny. Mais,
depuis quelques années, la vie communautaire
de l’île est en danger. Les
moines et les autres habitants luttent
pour faire valoir leur droit de rester
sur leurs terres. La veille de Noël, les
habitants de l’île participent à une fête
célébrant leur existence, leurs traditions
et l’espoir d’un futur meilleur. Passé
et présent se mêlent pour créer une
atmosphère onirique, mélange de voix,
de corps et de gestes. Le film de la réalisatrice
Xenia Okhapkina évoque avec
force ce microcosme du bout du monde.
Walaam ist eine Insel der Republik
Karelien im Norden der Russischen
Föderation. Ihr Name stammt von dem
finno-ugrischen Wort Valamo ab, das
so viel bedeutet wie «Land der hohen
Berge». Der Archipel befindet sich im
nördlichen Teil des Ladogasees, dem
grössten See Europas. Auf der Insel lebt
eine kleine Gemeinde von mehr oder
weniger 600 Seelen, die aus Mönchen
und Familien besteht. Das spirituelle
Zentrum Walaams ist das stavropigiale
orthodoxe Kloster Walaam. Seine einzigartige
Gesangstradition (der Walaamer
Gesang) vereint Elemente des byzantinischen
und des Snamennyj-Gesangs.
Doch seit einigen Jahren ist das Leben
auf der Insel bedroht. Mönche und
andere Bewohner kämpfen für ihr Recht,
auf der Insel zu bleiben. An Weihnachten
nehmen die Inselbewohner an einer
Aufführung teil, die ihr Leben, ihre Traditionen
und die Hoffnung auf eine bessere
Zukunft zelebriert. Vergangenheit und
Gegenwart verschmelzen zu einem traumartigen
Gewebe aus Stimmen, Körpern
und Gesten. Die Regisseurin Xenia
Okhapkina zeichnet das kraftvolle Bild
eines Mikrokosmos am Rande der Welt.
Valaam is an island in the north of Russia
that lies within the Republic of Karelia.
Its name derives from the Finno-Ugric
word ‘valamo‘ which means the high
mountain ground. It is an archipelago
in the northern portion of Lake Ladoga,
the largest lake in Europa. On the island
lives permanently a small community
of, more or less, 600 souls made up of
monks and families. The spiritual center
of Valaam is the stauropegic orthodox
Valamo Monastery. It has a unique tradition
of singing (the Valaam Chant) that
mixes some elements of the Byzantine
and Znamenny chants. But over the past
few years the way of life on the island
has been endangered. Monks and the
other inhabitants have been fighting in
order to claim their right to stay on their
land. On Christmas Eve, the population
of the island takes part in a performance
that celebrates their life, their tradition
and the hope for a better future. Past
and present merge together creating a
dreamlike texture of voices, bodies and
gestures. Director Xenia Okhapkina
evokes a powerful image of a microcsom
living at the edge of the world.
