Il y a des endroits dont on ne veut rien
savoir: les décharges en font partie. D’un
point de vue humain, c’est un endroit
affreux, un désert puant d’ordures. Mais
ce désert grouille de vie: une profusion
stupéfiante d’insectes, de reptiles,
d’oiseaux et de mammifères, tous entrelacés
dans une relation vie-mort existentielle,
donnant ainsi à la décharge
des allures oniriques étrangement
séduisantes. « L’histoire d’une décharge:
une création singulière typiquement
humaine et un biotype en soi. […] Nous
resterons des observateurs neutres,
de simples visiteurs venus de la ville,
source de tous les déchets. […] Nous
pourrons présenter le casting exact du
film après une sélection minutieuse des
acteurs principaux. Cependant, les candidats
qui auront les meilleures chances
d’être retenus seront le rat, le grandduc,
l’homme, le scarabée et la citrouille.
[…] Une centaine d’espèces d’oiseaux
environ (un tiers de toutes les espèces
d’oiseaux de Lettonie), qui a été observée
sur ce site, pourrait faire partie des
scènes de foule. En automne et en hiver,
7 à 9 mille mouettes font une apparition
visuelle et sonore des plus saisissantes.
Pigeons, choucas de tours et moineaux
feront aussi partie des figurants.» (LP)
Es gibt Orte, von denen wir nichts
wissen wollen. Müllhalden sind solche
Orte. Aus Sicht der Menschen ist das ein
garstiger Ort, eine stinkende Wüste aus
Unrat. Aber eine Wüste, die vor Leben
wuselt: Eine Fülle von Insekten, Reptilien,
Vögeln und Säugetieren, die durch
eine Beziehung auf Leben und Tod
miteinander verbunden sind und dem
Ganzen etwas eigentümlich Verführerisches,
Traumartiges verleihen. «Die
Geschichte einer Müllhalde – ein einzigartig
menschliches Gebilde und ein
eigenständiges Biotop. […] Wir bleiben
neutrale Beobachter, blosse Beobachter
aus der Stadt, des Ursprungs allen Mülls.
[…] Die genaue Rollenbesetzung des
Films werden wir nach einer sorgfältigen
Auswahl der Hauptdarsteller präsentieren.
Die aussichtsreichsten Kandidaten
sind jedoch bereits heute die Ratte, der
Uhu, der Mensch, der Käfer und der
Kürbis. […] Die rund hundert, an diesem
Ort beobachteten Vogelarten (ein Drittel
der in Lettland lebenden Arten) werden
möglicherweise für die Massenszenen
herangezogen. Im Winter machen sich
sieben- bis neuntausend Möwen in
Ton und Bild auf überwältigende Weise
bemerkbar. Weitere Statisten sind die
Tauben, die Spatzen und die Dohlen.»

There are places that we do not want to
know anything about; one such place
is a dumpsite. From the humans’ point
of view, it is a ghastly place, a stinking
desert of trash. But it is a desert that is
teaming with life: the astounding profusion
of insects, reptiles, birds and mammals,
all intertwined in an existential
life-death relationship, imparting some
strangely alluring dream-like quality to it.
“The story of a dumpsite – a singularly
human kind of formation and a biotope
in its own right. […] We will remain neutral
observers, mere visitors from the
City, the source of all waste. […] We
will be able to present the exact cast
for the film after a careful selection of
the main actors is made. Nevertheless,
candidates with the best chances to be
selected include the rat, the eagle owl,
the man, the beetle and the pumpkin.
[…] Approximately a hundred species of
birds (one third of the total of Latvia’s
bird species) that have been observed
on this site could take part in the mass
scenes. In winter and fall 7 to 9 thousand
seagulls make their presence seen
and heard in a most overwhelming way.
Pigeons, sparrows and jackdaws will
