Filmography
2013 What a fuck am I doing
on this battlefield (mlf)
l’Etat. Composé en trois chapitres qui
parfois cèdent la place à des moments
d’humour partagés avec d’autres musiciens,
ce film se situe toujours à la
bonne distance. La musique, qui le traverse,
se fait épilogue dans une très
belle séquence durant laquelle l’artiste
chante : « Et comment est-on supposé
Mit
diesen Bildern beginnt das Porträt der
dunklen Welt des Künstlers, der sich
als offensichtlicher Komplize der Regisseure
bei Proben, Konzerten, Gesprächen
oder mittels seiner Texte offenbart.
Der schmerzhaft klar denkende Elliott
beschreibt seine Träume, macht seine
Haltung gegenüber der Religion deutlich
und spricht über Depression und
den Zauber der Inspiration. Über Politik
und staatliche Manipulation hat er eine
klare Meinung. Der Film, in drei Kapitel
gegliedert, die Raum lassen für Situationskomik
zwischen Musikern, wahrt
immer die richtige Distanz. Die stets präsente
Musik spielt die Rolle des Epilogs
in einer sehr schönen Sequenz, in der
man den Musiker singen hört: «Und wie
soll man trauern, wenn man nicht genau
weiss, was gestorben ist» Das Erstlingswerk
der beiden jeweils auf Bild
und auf Ton spezialisierten Regisseure
offenbart sich als hinreissend einfühlsamer,
poetischer Film.
Backstage at a concert hall, the musician
Matt Elliot, also known for his
involvement with the group Third Eye
Foundation, is anxious about the late
arrival of another musician. This is the
beginning of a portrait of the dark and
tortured world of the artist, who – clearly
complicit with the directors – opens up
during rehearsals, concerts, interviews
or through his writings. With disturbing
clarity of expression, Elliott describes
his recent dreams, shares his points
of view on religion, and discusses his
depression and the magic of inspiration.
He also reveals his heartfelt opinions
on politics and state manipulation.
Consisting of three acts peppered by
interludes of humour shared with other
musicians, this film always maintains the
right distance from its subject. The music
running through the film forms the epilogue
to a superb sequence in which the
artist sings: “And how is one supposed
to mourn if one is not entirely sure what
has died” Specialising in image and
sound, respectively, the two directors
deliver a tremendously sensitive and
poetic directorial debut.
