Laila Pakalnina
Papa Gena
Latvia | 2001 | 10’ | 35 mm | No Dialogue
court instant. L’incursion de la musique
de Mozart dans un contexte urbain inhabituel
recrée en quelques minutes les
atmosphères délicatement absurdes et
poétiques qui sont caractéristiques de
Pakalnina. «La ville est ce qu’elle est. Il
faut avoir une très bonne raison pour
demander à un citadin de s’arrêter et de
rester calme devant la caméra pendant
un instant. Cette raison, cette fois-ci,
c’était Mozart.» (LP)
Die von der Kuratorin Helena Demakova
für die Biennale von Venedig 2001 in
Auftrag gegebene Arbeit besitzt unter
Pakalninas’ Dokumentarfilmen die
stärkste systematische, vorbestimmte
Struktur. Vor einer statischen Kamera
erscheinen Menschen: Ein Mann, ein
Mädchen, ein Kind, eine paar Frauen
und einige Jugendliche, die stehen, als
würden sie für ein Foto Modell stehen.
Alle tragen Kopfhörer und hören einen
Ausschnitt aus Mozarts Zauberflöte,
was unterschiedliche Reaktionen
auslöst. In der Zwischenzeit hören wir
nichts ausser Umgebungsgeräuschen
und andere Menschen, die ihres Weges
gehen. Wenn sie die Kopfhörer abnehmen,
hören auch wir Mozarts Musik für
einen kurzen Augenblick. Die Verlagerung
von Mozarts Musik in den ungewöhnlichen
‘urbanen’ Kontext lässt
innerhalb weniger Minuten die für Pakalnina
bezeichnende, leicht absurde und
poetische Atmosphäre entstehen. „Die
Stadt ist wie sie ist. Man braucht einen
ernsthaften Grund, um einen Stadtbewohner
zu bitten, kurz anzuhalten und
vor der Kamera still zu stehen. Diesmal
hat Mozart den Grund geliefert.» (LP)
Commissioned by the curator Helena
Demakova for the 2001 Venice Biennale
is Pakalnina’s most structurally systematic
and pre-determined documentary
work. Before a static camera people
appear: a man, a girl, a child, a couple
of women and a few teenagers, standing
as if they were posing for a photograph.
They all wear headphones and are listening
to an excerpt of Mozart’s “Magic
Flute”, which provokes various reactions.
In the meantime we just listen to ambient
noise and other people around go on
way. When they take off the headphones
we can also start enjoying Mozart’s
music for a brief moment. The displacement
of Mozart’s music into an unusual
“urban street” context, recreates in a few
minutes Pakalnina’s delicately absurd
and poetic trademark atmospheres. “The
city is as it is. There needs to be a serious
reason in order to ask an urban person
to stop and be calm in front of the
camera for a moment. This time Mozart
serves as the reason.” (LP)
