Le gouvernement soviétique a réagi
violemment aux mouvements d’indépendance
des pays baltes en janvier 1991.
Des tanks soviétiques ont attaqué la
foule de protestants en Lituanie et, peu
après, la même chose s’est produite à
Riga. La cathédrale du cœur de la ville
a ouvert ses portes aux protestants et
s’est transformée en refuge, en infirmerie
et en cuisine publique. « J’ai toujours
voulu faire des films documentaires
sans commentaires, et même sans interviews.
Faire de ‘vrais films’ dans lesquels
je pourrais exprimer tout ce que je veux
à travers l’atmosphère. En tant qu’étudiante
d’une école de cinéma, c’était là
mon intention et ma vision des choses.
Pourtant, je n’avais encore jamais mis
cette idée en pratique. Mais soudain,
c’est arrivé: les gens sont descendus
dans la rue, prêts à mourir pour libérer
leur pays. Il était inutile de demander
quoi que ce soit car tout était compréhensible
et défini par la seule atmosphère.

Die sowjetische Regierung hat auf die
im Januar 1991 einsetzenden Unabhängigkeitsbewegungen
im Baltikum mit
Gewalt reagiert. Sowjetische Panzer
griffen die Menschenmassen an, die in
Litauen demonstrierten und kurze Zeit
später geschah das Gleiche in Riga.
Die Kathedrale im Herzen der Stadt
öffnete den Demonstranten ihre Türen
und wurde zu einem Unterschlupf,
einer Krankenstation und einer öffentlichen
Küche. «Meine Vorstellung war es
immer, Dokumentarfilme ohne Begleitkommentar
und sogar ohne Interviews
zu machen. ‘Echte’ Filme zu machen, wo
man alles durch die Atmosphäre ausdrücken
kann. Als Filmstudentin war
dies meine Vorstellung und ernsthafte
Absicht, die jedoch zu diesem Augenblick
noch nicht in der Praxis getestet
worden war. Doch dann geschah es
– die Menschen waren in den Strassen,
bereit, für die Freiheit ihres Landes
zu sterben. Es mussten keine Fragen
gestellt werden, alles war durch die
Atmosphäre verständlich und definiert.»

The Soviet government reacted violently
to the independent movements of the
Baltic countries in January 1991. Soviet
tanks attacked the crowd that had been
demonstrating in Lithuania and, shortly
afterwards, the same thing happened in
Riga. The cathedral in the heart of the
city opened its doors to the demonstrators
and became a shelter, an infirmary
and a public kitchen. “I have always
been thinking about making documentary
films without voice over, even without
interviews. About making ‘real films’
where it is possible to express all that
you want to say through the atmosphere.
That was my, a film school student’s,
understanding and serious intention,
that was not tried out in praxis yet at
that moment of time. But suddenly it
happened – people were on the streets
ready to die for freedom of their country
and there was no need to ask anything,
because everything was understandable
and defined by the atmosphere.” (LP)
