«Je t’aime ! » Une jeune Roumaine doit
crier son amour assez fort pour que
l’homme qu’elle aime puisse l’entendre
depuis sa fenêtre de prison, par-delà le
fossé et le mur. Il est enfermé dans une
prison d’Amsterdam, elle se tient sur le
petit chemin d’en face. A travers leurs
discussions quotidiennes, ils essaient
de préserver une certaine normalité
dans leur relation. Elle s’assied et lui
lit le programme de télévision à haute
voix ou lui rappelle de prendre ses vitamines.
Toujours présente, mais exclue
des discussions, une petite fille joue
tranquillement avec sa poupée Barbie.
Space in Between renonce à expliquer
les circonstances et préfère observer
la visiteuse dont on ne perçoit le mari
qu’à travers une ombre ou des bribes
de paroles. Leurs échanges incarnent
leur relation amoureuse. Notre regard
demeure sur l’espace, les obstacles et
l’abîme qui séparent les deux amants –
les roseaux, l’eau, le ciel et le mur de la
prison.
«Ich liebe Dich!» Eine junge rumänische
Frau muss ihre Liebesbekundung rufen
und zwar so laut, dass sie den Geliebten
– über den Wassergraben und die
Mauer hinweg – an seinem Fenster in
der Festung erreichen kann. Er sitzt in
einem Amsterdamer Gefängnis, sie steht
auf dem kleinen Weg davor. Durch alltägliche
Gespräche versuchen sie eine
gewisse Normalität in ihrer Beziehung
beizubehalten. Sie setzt sich hin und liest
ihm das Fernsehprogramm laut vor oder
ermahnt ihn seine Vitaminen zu nehmen.
Immer mit dabei, vom Dialog ausgeschlossen,
spielt ein Mädchen mit ihrer
Barbiepuppe. Space in Between verzichtet
auf die Erklärung der Umstände und
beobachtet stattdessen die Besucherin,
deren Mann nur als Schatten oder
durch Wortfetzen wahrnehmbar ist. Ihre
Worte sind das Liebesband. Uns verbleibt
der Blick auf die Zwischenräume,
auf die Hindernisse und Abgründe, die
zwischen den Liebenden stehen – das
Schilf, das Wasser, der Himmel und eine
Gefängnismauer.

has to shout out her expression of love
loud enough that it can be heard by
her lover through his prison window on
the other side of the moat and wall. He
sits inside an Amsterdam prison, while
she stands on the narrow path in front.
Through everyday conversations, they
attempt to preserve a sense of normality
in their relationship. She sits down and
reads the TV schedule aloud to him, or
reminds him to take his vitamins. Always
there yet excluded from the dialogue,
a girl plays with her Barbie doll. Space
in Between never attempts to explain
the circumstances and instead simply
observes the visitor whose man can only
be seen as a shadow or through snippets
of speech. Their words represent
their love bond. We are left with a view
of the spaces in between, the obstacles
and pitfalls that divide the two lovers –
the reeds, the water, the sky and a prison
wall.
