La famille de Dayana, originaire du Sri
Lanka, a émigré à Paris il y a près de
30 ans. Après une expulsion de leur
logement, les parents et leurs deux
enfants s’installent dans l’arrière-boutique
de leur épicerie – le Dayana minimarché
– et s’efforcent de poursuivre
leurs vies dans cet espace étriqué, au
rythme des soucis administratifs et
financiers. Tandis que les aînés luttent
pour que leurs enfants se créent une vie
meilleure grâce à leurs études et au dur
labeur, eux rêvent de paillettes et d’accessoires
technologiques. Entre rites
traditionnels et une certaine modernité
occidentale, tamoul et français, se joue
inévitablement la question de l’intégration
et celle, étroitement liée, du conflit
générationnel exacerbé par cette situation.
Dayana, quinze ans, qui rêve d’être
Miss Sri Lanka ou actrice, est emblématique
d’un certain changement, mais ne
désavoue pas ses racines ou l’amour de
ses parents. Au-delà de la beauté des
liens familiaux représentés, le film est
par ailleurs audacieusement ponctué
d’intermèdes musicaux inspirés du style
bollywoodien, durant lesquels les protagonistes
chantent leurs malheurs et
leurs rêves.
Dayanas Familie kommt aus Sri Lanka
und lebt seit nahezu 30 Jahren in Paris.
Nachdem sie aus ihrer Wohnung hinausgeworfen
wurden, ziehen die Eltern
mit ihren zwei Kindern in das Hinterzimmer
ihres «Dayana Minimarché»
getauften Lebensmittelgeschäfts und
bemühen sich, im Rhythmus der finanziellen
und behördlichen Sorgen, ihr
Leben auf engstem Raum weiterzuleben.
Während die Eltern dafür kämpfen,
dass sich ihre Kinder durch Ausbildung
und harte Arbeit ein besseres Leben
aufbauen, träumen diese von Glitzer und
technologischen Spielereien. Zwischen
traditionellen Ritualen, einer gewissen
westlichen Modernität, Tamilisch und
Französisch stellt sich unausweichlich
die Frage der Integration und des eng
damit verbundenen und durch die Situation
verstärkten Generationenkonflikts.
Die 15-jährige Dayana träumt davon,
Miss Sri Lanka oder Schauspielerin zu
werden und verkörpert einen gewissen
Wandel, verleugnet dabei aber weder
ihre Wurzeln noch die Liebe zu ihren
Eltern. Über die Schönheit der dargestellten
Familienbande hinaus ist der
Film mutig von musikalischen Einlagen
im Bollywood-Stil durchzogen, in denen
die Protagonisten ihr Leid und ihre
Träume singend in Worte fassen.
Dayana’s family originated in Sri Lanka,
but emigrated to Paris almost 30 years
ago. After being evicted from their housing,
the parents and their two children
moved into the back room of their grocer’s
shop – the Dayana Mini Market
– and are striving to move ahead with
their lives in this cramped space, beset
by administrative and financial problems.
While the parents struggle on so that
their children can enjoy a better life for
themselves through their studies and
hard work, the latter dream about glamorous
lifestyles and high-tech gadgetry.
Between traditional rituals and a certain
Western modernity, at once Tamil and
French, the problem of integration is
inevitably raised, as are the closely linked
problems of the generation gap intensified
by this situation. Fifteen-year-old
Dayana, who dreams of becoming Miss
Sri Lanka or an actress, is symbolic of
a certain change, yet never disowns her
roots or the love of her parents. Beyond
the film’s beautiful depiction of family
ties, it is also strikingly peppered by
Bollywood-inspired musical interludes in
which the protagonists sing of their misfortunes
and dreams.
