The Mail
» (LP)
Die Post kommt aus der Nacht. Sie
landet auf einem Tisch und wird bearbeitet.
Danach geht jeder Brief seinen
eigenen Weg und wird von Hand an
unterschiedliche Orte, zu unterschiedlichen
Menschen und in jeweils einzigartige
Situationen befördert. Es ist früher
Morgen und wir folgen der Briefträgerin
bei ihrer Runde. Sie passiert Häuser,
Landschaften und Menschen, die ein
aussagekräftiges Gemeinschaftsporträt
bilden. Die Art der Aufnahmen, das
akribische Schneiden und die rigorose
Schwarz-Weiss-Fotografie tragen
unverkennbar die Züge von Pakalninas›
Universum. «Die Briefträgerin lief auf
eine bestimmte Art. Sehr häufig änderte
sie fast unmerklich den Rhythmus ihrer
Schritte. Das war sicherlich sehr wichtig.
So wichtig wie der Tomatensetzling
auf dem Fensterbrett, wie Pflastersteine
in der Sonne, wie ein grosser Hund
in einem kleinen Auto. Und wir hatten
immer mehr Freude daran, zu beobachten
und zuzuhören.» (LP)
The mail arrives from the night. It lands
on a desk and is processed. Every letter
then takes its own path, taken by hand
to a multitude of places, people, radically
different, unique situations. It is early in
the morning and we start following the
post-woman on her journey. She passes
houses, landscape and people, composing
an inspired collective portrait. The
nature of the shots, the meticulous editing
and the rigorous black and white
photography reveal the unmistakable
traits of Pakalnina’s universe. “The postwoman
was walking in a special way.
She very often unnoticeably changed
the rhythm of her steps. That surely was
very important. As important as tomato
seedlings on the window-sill, as cobblestones
in the sun, as a big dog in a small
car. And we enjoyed observing and listening
more and more.” (LP)
