Créé en 1957, Yarmouk est un district de
Damas abritant un camp (non officiel)
de réfugiés palestiniens qui ont fui la
Nakba (1948) : des tours en béton hérissées
d’antennes, un camp qui pousse en
hauteur… sans pour autant tutoyer les
étoiles. Hassan, passionné de théâtre,
l’aime ce camp et ses terrasses dominant
la ville; Ala’a, lui, a pris la tangente
pour étudier le cinéma au Chili ; Samer
essaie d’échapper à la conscription obligatoire
dans l’armée syrienne ; Tasneem
et Waed poursuivent leurs études. Les
chebabs du Yarmouk, comme ils se
nomment, c’est une bande de copains,
tous jeunes adultes palestiniens issus
de la troisième génération. Coincés dans
un pays où ils ont grandi sans jamais s’y
intégrer, ils rêvent, fument, parlent, s’entraident,
sous le regard de la caméra
complice d’Axel Salvatori-Sinz. Le temps
des feddayin et de la révolution nationaliste
est révolu. Les « chebabs » (terme
désignant des jeunes combattants
palestiniens) sont comme les pigeons
qui volent en nuées au-dessus des toits
du Yarmouk – motif récurrent du film. Le
ciel semble leur appartenir et pourtant,
leur vol, léger, les ramène toujours au
point de départ.
Der seit 1957 bestehende Damaszener
Bezirk Yarmouk birgt ein (inoffizielles)
Lager für palästinensische, vor der
Nakba (1948) geflohene Flüchtlinge:
von Antennen übersäte Betontürme,
ein Lager, das in die Höhe strebt… und
sich nie den Sternen nähert. Hassan mit
seiner Leidenschaft fürs Theater liebt
das Lager mit seinen über der Stadt thronenden
Terrassen, Ala’a hat sich davon
gemacht, um in Chile Film zu studieren,
Samer versucht, der Wehrdienstpflicht
in der syrischen Armee zu entgehen,
Tasneem und Waed studieren. Die
chebabs von Yarmouk, wie sie sich selbst
nennen, sind eine Gruppe befreundeter
junger Palästinenser der dritten Generation.
Sie stecken in einem Land fest, in
dem sie aufgewachsen sind, ohne sich zu
integrieren. Sie träumen, rauchen, reden
und helfen sich gegenseitig unter dem
verständnisvollen Blick der Kamera von
Axel Salvatori-Sinz. Die Zeiten der Feddayin
und der nationalistischen Revolution
sind vorüber. Die «Chebab» (so
werden die jungen palästinensischen
Kämpfer bezeichnet) sind wie das wiederkehrende
Bild der Taubenschwärme
über den Dächern Yarmouks. Der
Himmel scheint ihnen zu gehören, und
doch kehren sie immer wieder an den
Ausgangspunkt zurück.
Yarmouk is a district of Damascus created
in 1957 which accommodates an
(unofficial) camp for Palestinian refugees
who fled Nakba (1948): concrete
towers bristling with antennas, a camp
becoming taller and taller… although
it is far from reaching for the stars.
Hassan, a theatre buff, loves this camp
and its terraces overlooking the town;
as for Ala’a, he has taken a detour to
study film in Chile; Samer is attempting
to avoid compulsory service in the Syrian
army; and Tasneem and Waed are continuing
their education. Les chebabs du
Yarmouk, as they call themselves, are
a group of third-generation Palestinian
friends. Stuck in a country where they
grew up without ever feeling integrated,
they dream, smoke, talk and help each
other out, all under the gaze of Axel
Salvatori-Sinz’s observant camera. The
time of the Fedayeen and the nationalist
revolution is long gone. The “chebabs”
(a term designating young Palestinian
fighters) are like a flock of pigeons flying
over the rooftops of Yarmouk – a recurring
motif in the film. The skies appear to
belong to them, and yet their short flight
always brings them back to the starting
point.
