Sobota
Germany | 2013 | 30’ | HD | German
World Premiere
Sobota est un ancien criminel et impitoyable
proxénète, connu dans le quartier
rouge de la Vienne des années
en béton, dans une cave sans lumière ;
c’est à ce moment-là seulement que l’on
réalise à quel point l’on est dangereux. »
(Sobota)
Sobota, ein Krimineller und unbarmherziger
Zuhälter, trieb in den 1960er-Jahren
im Wiener Rotlichtviertel sein Unwesen.
Im Gefängnis schrieb er ein autobiographisches
«Roman-Protokoll», das
bei seiner Veröffentlichung Ende der
1970er-Jahre ein Bestseller wurde und
nicht zuletzt aufgrund seiner extremen
Gewalt durch die Medien ging. Über den
Aspekt der Faszination hinaus üben der
Mann und das Buch eine destabilisierende
Wirkung aus. Der Film, auf halbem
Weg zwischen Spielfilm und Doku, sucht
nicht nach möglichen Motiven, vielmehr
sondiert er die dunkle Seite des Menschen
anhand der sonderlichen, mehr
als vierzig Jahre später stattfindenden
Begegnung zwischen einer jungen Frau
und Sobota. Die allgegenwärtige Spannung
wird durch das kalte, gestochen
scharfe Bild und das Flüstern Sobotas,
der seine Stimme vermutlich durch eine
Krankheit verloren hat, noch verstärkt.
Die nur schwer zu ertragende Ambivalenz
der Beziehung zwischen den beiden
Figuren ruft unweigerlich ein von Neugier
geprägtes Unbehagen wach. «Wenn
man sich hinter Gittern wiederfindet, in
einem Betonbunker, einem Keller ohne
Licht – erst dann wird einem bewusst,
wie gefährlich man tatsächlich ist.»
(Sobota)
As a former criminal and ruthless pimp,
Sobota was well known in the red-light
district of 1960s Vienna. Sent to prison,
he wrote an autobiographical “novel/
account” which became a bestseller
on publication at the end of the 1970s
and, because of its violence, was copiously
mythologised in the media. Going
beyond the fascination, the man and
the text are disconcerting. Rather than
attempting to find presumed motives,
this film, lying between fiction and
documentary, explores the dark side of
humanity through a singular meeting
between a young woman and Sobota
more than forty years later. Tension runs
through it, exacerbated by cold, sharp
images and Sobota’s whispering voice –
no doubt lost during a past illness. The
ambiguity of the relationship between
these two individuals is difficult to bear,
inevitably making us feel uncomfortable,
to some extent, yet curious. “When you
find yourself again, locked up, behind
bars, in a cement bunker, in an unlit cellar,
that’s when you realise how dangerous
you are.” (Sobota)
