Livia est le Père Noël, une femme âgée
vivant dans un bâtiment gris hérité
de la période soviétique, entourée de
ses animaux. Livia a 7 chiens, 6 chats,
2 lapins, 1 corbeau, 1 pigeon, 1 chinchilla,
1 cobaye, 10 dègues et des poissons.
« Certains disent que Livia est différente,
peut-être même bizarre. Mais je pense
qu’elle est juste mieux et plus généreuse
que les autres. Et mieux que moi, sans
aucun doute. Lorsque je réfléchis pourquoi
cette personne est beaucoup plus
généreuse et bienveillante que d’autres,
je me rends compte que l’équilibre
des choses dans ce monde y est pour
quelque chose: s’il y a plus de dureté de
cœur quelque part, Livia compense par
son surplus de bonté. C’est le sentiment
qui m’a habité lorsque j’ai fait ce film. S’il
y a des films sans cœur (et il y en a),
nous nous devons d’en faire d’autres qui
attestent de la bonté de ce monde. Et
pourtant, j’ai remarqué que, tout en ressentant
de la gratification moralement et
artistiquement en réalisant ce film, je ne
voulais pas en parler à ma famille et à
mes amis. Je ne voulais pas employer
de mots pour raconter l’histoire. Je veux
laisser le film parler pour lui-même. »

Der Weihnachtsmann ist Livia, eine alte
Frau, die umgeben von ihren Tieren in
einem grauen, an die Sowjetzeit erinnernden
Wohnblock lebt. Livia hat
7 Hunde, 6 Katzen, 2 Hasen, 1 Krähe,
1 Taube, 1 Chinchilla, 1 Meerschweinchen,
10 Degus und ein paar Fische.
«Manche mögen Livia als anders, vielleicht
sogar seltsam bezeichnen. Ich
glaube, dass sie einfach besser und
grosszügiger ist als andere Menschen.
Und auf jeden Fall besser als ich. Wenn
ich darüber nachdenke, warum diese
Person so viel grosszügiger und rücksichtsvoller
als andere ist, wird mir klar,
dass es etwas mit dem Gleichgewicht in
dieser Welt zu tun hat – wenn es irgendwo
mehr Kaltherzigkeit gibt, ist in Livia
noch mehr Herzensgüte. Dieses Gefühl
hatte ich beim Drehen dieses Films.
Wenn es herzlose Filme gibt (und die
gibt es), brauchen wir ebenfalls Filme,
die von Güte zeugen. Und doch wollte
ich während der Dreharbeiten trotz der
erfahrenen moralischen und künstlerischen
Erfüllung Freunden und Familien
nicht davon erzählen. Ich wollte für das
Erzählen der Geschichte keine Worte
gebrauchen. Der Film soll für sich selber
sprechen.» (LP)
Santa Claus is Livia, an elderly woman
living in a grey building remindful of the
soviet era, surrounded by her animals.
Livia owns 7 dogs, 6 cats, 2 rabbits,
1 crow, 1 pigeon, 1 chinchilla, 1 guinea
pig, 10 degus and some fish. “Some may
call Livia different, maybe even strange.
I think she is simply better and more
generous than others. And better than
me, for sure. When I think about why
this generous and considerate person
is so much more so than others, I realize,
that it has something to do with the
balance of things in this world – when
there is more cold-heartedness somewhere,
there is more goodness in Livia.
This is the feeling I took with me when
creating this film. If there are heartless
movies (and there are:), then we also
need ones that attest to kindness. And
yet I noticed that, although experiencing
moral and artistic gratification during the
filming process, I didn’t want to tell family
and friends about it. I didn’t want to use
words to tell the story. I want to let the
film do the talking for itself.” (LP)
