Russie, un village dans l’Oural du Sud,
plusieurs fois irradié par des accidents
survenus à la centrale nucléaire
« Mayak », qui produisait la matière fissile
des armes atomiques soviétiques.
C’est l’un des endroits les plus pollués
par les déchets radioactifs sur terre.
Des habitants y mènent pourtant leur
vie. On les rencontre et on écoute leur
récit d’une horreur ordinaire, leurs souvenirs
des accidents, leurs inquiétudes
face au futur, tout en percevant leur
force de résistance, grâce au respect et
à la sensibilité du réalisateur. La caméra
rentre dans les maisons, sort dans les
rues et s’ouvre aux paysages : on perçoit
partout la toxicité invisible. La photographie
en noir et blanc, d’une beauté
irréelle et dramatique, réussi le défi de
rendre visible cet invisible. La matière
même de l’image paraît irradiée. Baigné
dans une telle lumière, un acte normal,
comme préparer un repas, ne l’est plus
tout à fait. La rigueur du cadrage, le travail
subtil du son et l’impeccable sens du
montage contribuent à la création d’une
atmosphère très difficile à oublier.

durch Unfälle im Kernkraftwerk
«Mayak» verstrahlt wurde, wo Spaltprodukte
für die sowjetischen Nuklearwaffen
hergestellt wurden. Es zählt
zu den Orten mit der stärksten Strahlenbelastung
der Welt. Dennoch gehen
hier die Einwohner ihrem Leben nach.
Man begegnet ihnen und lauscht ihren
Berichten über den ganz normalen
Horror, ihren Erinnerungen an die Unfälle,
ihren Sorgen über die Zukunft, wobei
durch den Respekt und die Feinfühligkeit
des Regisseurs stets ihre Widerstandskraft
sichtbar bleibt. Die Kamera
geht in die Häuser, hinaus in die Strassen
und öffnet sich den Landschaften:
Die unsichtbare Toxizität ist überall zu
spüren. Der unwirklich schönen, dramatischen
Schwarz-Weiss-Fotografie gelingt
das Kunststück, dieses Unsichtbare
sichtbar zu machen. Das Bildmaterial
selbst wirkt wie verstrahlt. In einem solchen
Licht verliert sogar etwas so Alltägliches
wie die Zubereitung einer Mahlzeit
seine Banalität. Die strenge Auswahl der
Einstellungen, die subtile Tonarbeit und
das untrügliche Gespür für den Schnitt
tragen zur Entstehung einer Atmosphäre
bei, die man nur schwer wieder vergessen
kann.
A village in Russia’s south Ural
Mountains has been exposed to radiation
several times due to incidents at
the “Mayak” nuclear plant, which used to
produce fissile material for Soviet atomic
weapons. It is one of the most polluted
places by radioactive waste on earth, yet
its inhabitants go about their lives. We
meet them and listen to their accounts of
commonplace horror, memories of accidents,
concerns about the future, sensing
at the same time the strength of their
resilience, thanks to the respect and
sensitivity of the director. The camera
goes into houses, along streets, opening
up landscapes: we perceive invisible toxicity
everywhere. The surreally beautiful
and dramatic black-and-white photography
successfully rises to the challenge
of making the invisible visible. The very
matter of the image seems exposed to
radiation. Bathed in such light, a normal
act, like preparing a meal, is no longer
quite normal. Rigorous framing, subtle
sound work and an impeccable sense of
editing contribute to an atmosphere that
is very difficult to forget.
