The replacing of the infinitive in the Balkan languages has been differently explained by various scholars. Some linguists, like Miklosich, Weigand and Gabinski, have tried to seek its origin in a substratum language, which has been differently thought about by each of them. All of them, however, assume that the substratum accounting for the gradual disappearance of the infinitive in the Balkan languages, had not developed an infinitive at all. (15-16). Thus, all of them have based their opinions upon an unconfirmed hypothesis. Moreover, even if such a hypothesis were to be assumed without any reserve, it should yet remain to make clear how such a substratum language has exerted such a great influence upon the other Balkan languages in replacing their infinitives. The establishment of a relative chronology in such a case is indispensable.(17). Some other scholars, like Meyer, Pedersen, Sandfeld, Rohlfs etc., have upheld the thesis that the disappearance of the infinitive in the Balkan languages is due to the Greek influence. Sandfeld has sustained his opinion by the following arguments: 1) The phenomenon is more restricted in areas far from Greece. 2) Greek has exerted a great influence upon the Balkan languages. 3) This phenomenon in Greek is relatively early attested.(18). The presumed Greek influence should have been more convincingly argued. It should be recalled that the disappearance of the infinitive in such a language as Greek is an unexpected phenomenon. Moreover, the early attestation of the phenomenon in Greek cannot be considered as an indisputable argument either.(19). According to Reichenkron, who does not exclude a certain secondary Greek influence, the phenomenon under discussion in the Balkan languages (Greek excluded) is due to the syntaxis of the vulgar Latin. Such an opinion has been rightfully criticized.(20). Some other linguists have considered the phenomenon under discussion in the Balkan languages as a parallel development brought about by the “lack of clarity”, “lack of expressiveness”, “abstract character” of the infinitive.(21). From the above survey it clearly emerges that the Balkan infinitive problem is rather complicated. In such circumstances, it seems more plausible to see in this phenomenon one of the most evident consequences of an ancient tendency of the Balkan languages to render the oral communication as clear as possible by utilizing even redundant linguistic means. The replacing of the infinitive by a finite form should have been one of the consequences of that tendency. However, if one takes into consideration the relative chronology of such a phenomenon, then one cannot rule out the possibility of an external influence particularly upon those languages, in which it is of a relatively recent date, as in the case of Bulgarian-Macedonian. It remains to be further investigated whether such an influence should be presumed for Rumanian, too.(22). As far as Albanian is concerned, this problem seems still more complicated, because its solution is conditioned by the clarification of the very question of its infinitive (see && 10-14). If one admits the opinion that Albanian or “proto-Albanian” has had a synthetic infinitive, then it is necessary to fix the time of its disappearance - before or after the coining of the type me ba. If it has disappeared before the creation of the type me ba, namely at a relatively early time, then one would hardly think of a Greek influence in this regard. On the contrary, if it has disappeared simultaneously to the grammaticalization of the type me ba, then the problem of the infinitive in Albanian should be presented in quite a different way. In such a case one has to admit that the former type has been gradually replaced by a more expressive formation. On the other hand, if one admits the opinion that Albanian has never had a synthetic infinitive before the type me ba, then the problem of the replacing of the infinitive might be put forward only for the southern Albanian dialect. Some scholars, who presume that the type me ba has existed in the southern dialect, too, maintain that its disappearance is due to the Greek influence. (23). Such an influence cannot be categorically ruled out. It should be recalled, however, that in the course of the last four centuries the southern Albanian dialect, despite the presumed Greek influence, has developed the non-finite form of the type për të bërë, whose functions mostly correspond to those of the infinitive.
