Simultaneously with the ‘rise’ of the BRIC (Brasilia, Russia, India and China) countries,
the issue of when and where globalization started has recently attracted the interest of many
scholars from various fields, from sociology through economics and financial history.
The course offers a detailed and analytical perspective on the roles of the Asian continent in
the European economic, financial and political development in the last three centuries. We
will have a thorough and interesting view on how Asia and Europe (with Americas)
interacted in various fields by reading original documents such as diaries and chronicles and
by analyzing various items and paintings from the intertwined periods.
This course is recommended to students who are interested in the European effects on Asia
and the Asian effects on Europe. We have ten different topics in the course, including
reading assignments, essays and class debates.
