The course will offer anthropological analysis of popular interpretations of the Bible in
various cultures and traditions. Not only the canonical, but also apocryphal versions of the
Scriptural text will be considered. Special attention will be paid to verbal and visual
renditions of some Old Testament cosmogonic narratives; legends about the fate of the first
people, the Fratricide, the Flood, the Confusion of languages, the Filial sacrifice (the epos
of Abraham and Isaac), the saga of Jacob and Joseph, the saga of Moses and the Exodus,
the lineage of David and Solomon, the Elijah epos, etc. will be discussed. New Testament
themes will be concerned with oral renditions of Synoptic and apocryphal Gospels, the
Deeds of the Apostles, and the Apocalypse. Archival recordings of vernacular oral songs
and chants interpreting Biblical themes will also be part of the material presented. Special
emphasis will be given to the ways in which “the folk Bible“ shapes customary law, ritual
practices and beliefs systems among various communities around the world. Iconography
will also be included in the discussions.
All texts studied will be in English translation.

Die Vorlesung gibt einen Überblick über die jüdische Geschichte von der Eroberung des
Nahen Osten durch Alexander den Großen bis hin zur Eroberung desselben Teils der Welt
durch die Muslime. Der Kurs konzentriert sich auf die zentralen Themen dieser Epoche:
den Hellenistischen Einfluss, die römische Herrschaft, den Aufstieg des Christentums, die
Unabhängigkeit der Juden und den Verlust derselben sowie die Gründung einer jüdischen
Diaspora.
