Last rites will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Athens United Methodist church with the Rev.<br />

Wayne JOHNSON officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Hope cemetery at Athens. Friends<br />

may call at the Sheetz funeral home in Akron after 2 p.m. Sunday until noon Monday and at the<br />

church for one hour before services.<br />

Monday, October 26, <strong>1970</strong><br />

Meda E. Schmidt<br />

Mrs. Meda E. SCHMIDT, 88, R.R. 2, Akron, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the National<br />

Nursing home in <strong>Rochester</strong>, where she had resided for one year. She had been in failing health<br />

four years.<br />

Born Dec. 1, 1881 near Athens, she was the daughter of Jonas and Elizabeth SAMPLE<br />

NYE. She moved to the Akron community four years ago from Chicago and resided with Mr. and<br />

Mrs. Dewey MERLEY. Her husband, Gus SCHMIDT, preceded in death. Mrs. Schmidt attended<br />

the Athens United Methodist church. Nieces and nephews are the only survivors. Four sisters and<br />

two brothers preceded in death.<br />

Final rites will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Haupert funeral home at Akron with the Rev.<br />

Wayne JOHNSON officiating. Cremation will follow. Friends may call at the funeral home after<br />

7 o’clock this evening.<br />

James Brooke<br />

Final rites were conducted Saturday at Knox for James BROOKE, 70, former <strong>Rochester</strong><br />

resident, who died Thursday in an automobile accident. His car struck the rear of a semi-trailer on<br />

U.S. 35, north of Knox. His wife, Katherine [BROOKE], 60, was injured in the crash and is listed<br />

in fair condition.<br />

Mr. Brooke was a resident of this city from 1925 to 1935 when he bought the <strong>Rochester</strong><br />

Lumber company which was later sold to Max HAWORTH. He had been in the lumber business<br />

in <strong>Rochester</strong>, LaPorte and Knox for 52 years and had recently retired. He and his wife were<br />

preparing to move to Florida. Mr. Brooke is survived by his wife, a son, James [BROOKE] Jr.,<br />

and a thony and five grandchildren. [sic]<br />

Tuesday, October 27, <strong>1970</strong><br />

Olin Wagoner<br />

Olin WAGONER, 83, 700 Madison street, died at 3 p.m. Monday in the Miller nursing<br />

home. He had been a patient two weeks and in failing health two years.<br />

Born Nov. 30, 1886, in Pulaski county, he was the son of John and Rebecca HOOD<br />

WAGONER. His marriage was Jan. 17, 1911, in <strong>Rochester</strong>, to Golda EMMONS, who survives.<br />

He had lived most of his life in <strong>Fulton</strong> county and retired from farming in Newcastle township in<br />

1957.<br />

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Noble (Reba) ISLEY, Disko, and Mrs. Trella<br />

KENNEDY, Warsaw; twelve grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and nieces and<br />

nephews. His parents and three sisters preceded in death.<br />

Final rites are tentatively set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the Foster & Good funeral home.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. Allen JUMP will officiate. Burial will be in the Reichter cemetery northeast of<br />

<strong>Rochester</strong>. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
