Peirce C. Ward<br />
[Peirce] C. WARD, 84, R.R. 3, prominent Richland township farmer and former Chicago<br />
business executive, died suddenly Thursday afternoon at his winter apartment home in Lighthouse<br />
Point, Fla. He had been in ill health for three years, but had remained active until the last two<br />
months.<br />
Mr. and Mrs. Ward, who had a cottage at Lake Maxinkuckee, acquired four farms here<br />
and they moved to their home on Ind. 110 in 1936. He retired from Chicago business activities<br />
and devoted fulltime to managing the Indian Hill Farms.<br />
He built up a large herd of blooded Angus cattle and held numerous stock sales at his<br />
farm that attracted buyers from many states. He exhibited his prize animals at the International<br />
and Indiana stock shows and won a number of high awards.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Maxinkuckee cottage had been built by his grandfather and the Wards and children<br />
spent most of their summers there. He often mentioned that six generations of the family had<br />
lived in the cottage during vacation periods.<br />
Mr. Ward was born in Lafayette, Nov. 3, 1885, the son of Fred and Elizabeth PEIRCE<br />
WARD. He attended Purdue university and while a young man moved to Chicago. On Sept. 23,<br />
1911, he was married to Edith AISHTON, Winnetka, Ill., and they resided there until they came to<br />
Indian Hill.<br />
Mr. Ward was a member of the Winnetka Congregational church and the Sigma Chi<br />
fraternity. He maintained much interest in Culver Military Academy all during his life.<br />
He was chairman of the first board of trustees of Woodlawn hospital after it was acquired<br />
by <strong>Fulton</strong> county. He was a director of the Indiana Gas company, Indianapolis; Central Telephone<br />
company, Lincoln, Neb.; Lacrosse Telephone company, Lacrosse, Wis.; and the Southern<br />
Telephone company, Tallahassee, Fla. He recently retired from the board of <strong>Public</strong> Service<br />
Indiana.<br />
In Chicago he became a broker and was associated with Golden Sacks company and later<br />
was a partner in Field, Ward & Glore, a leading stock and bond brokerage company. <strong>The</strong> senior<br />
member was Marshall Field III.<br />
Surviving are his wife and three children, Mrs. Jean WARD WOLLETT, Culver; Peirce<br />
Coltom WARD Jr., Riverside, Conn; and Miss Edith Aishton WARD, Laguna Beach, Cal.; eight<br />
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.<br />
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Culver Military Academy Memorial chapel<br />
with the Academy chaplain, Jared F. FOSTER, officiating. Burial will be in Spring Vale<br />
cemetery, Lafayette. Friends may call at the Easterday-Bonine funeral home in Culver after 4<br />
p.m. Sunday.<br />
<strong>The</strong> family requests that memorials other than flowers be in the form of contributions to<br />
the coronary unit of Parkview hospital, Plymouth.<br />
Edith Brubaker<br />
Mrs. Eugene (Edith) CHESTNUT BRUBAKER died at her residence in Chicago<br />
Wednesday. A former <strong>Rochester</strong> resident she was the daughter of Milo and Minnie CHESTNUT.<br />
Surviving are one daughter, one sister and two grandchildren.<br />
Final rites will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist church on Ironwood road, South<br />
Bend. Graveside services will be at the <strong>Rochester</strong> I.O.O.F. cemetery at 4 p.m.
