Herbert Craft<br />

Herbert CRAFT, 52, R.R. 2, <strong>Rochester</strong>, died at his residence at 11:30 p.m. Friday of an<br />

apparent coronary attack after several years’ illness.<br />

He was born Feb. 10, 1915 in Salyersville, Ky. and had lived in the local area for the past<br />

30 years. He was married April 2, 1941 in Salyersville to Edna CARPENTER who survives. He<br />

retired from service with the Erie-Lackawanna railroad after 17 years due to ill health. He was a<br />

member of the Eagles lodge 852.<br />

He is survived by five daughers, Mrs. Larry (Mary) ARVIN, Athens, Mrs. Kathy<br />

BALDWIN, R.R. 2, <strong>Rochester</strong>, Mrs. Jack (Barbara) CARTWRIGHT, R.R. 5, <strong>Rochester</strong>, Karen<br />

and Rosa [CRAFT], at home; two sons, Paul and Steven [CRAFT], both at home; five<br />

grandchildren; a half-brother, Connie COLLINS, Salyersville, Ky.<br />

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Foster & Good funeral home with the Rev.<br />

Gary McDONALD officiating. Burial will be in the <strong>Rochester</strong> I.O.O.F. cemetery.<br />

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday.<br />

Dr. Howard H. Rowe<br />

Dr. Howard H. ROWE, 62, 417 West Ninth street, died Saturday at 11:50 p.m. in South<br />

Bend Memorial hospital, where he had been admitted at 5:45 a.m. that day, after suffering a heart<br />

attack at his home.<br />

Dr. Rowe’s death was entirely unexpected; he had attended the <strong>Rochester</strong> high school<br />

basketball game, as was his usual custom, Friday night at Warsaw.<br />

Last rites will be Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. in the St. Joseph’s Catholic church with<br />

Father George LANNING officiating. Burial will be in the Athens cemetery. Friends may call at<br />

the Foster & Good funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. <strong>The</strong> Rosary will be recited at the funeral<br />

home Tuesday at 7 p.m. by Father Harold WELLER.<br />

Dr. Rowe, who had been in the general practice of medicine in <strong>Rochester</strong> since 1944, is<br />

the scond local physician to die suddenly of a heart attack this year. Dr. E. V. HERENDEEN was<br />

stricken fatally Aug. 3.<br />

<strong>The</strong> past four months Dr. Rowe had been in charge of the campaign to raise funds to<br />

equip the coronary and intensive care unit at Woodlawn hospital in Dr. Herendeen’s memory. <strong>The</strong><br />

drive went over its $25,000 goal.<br />

He had been active in civic affairs despite his medical practice, having served as county<br />

coroner from 1956-64 and as school board member during the time new elementary schools were<br />

planned and built here in the 1950s.<br />

A graduate of <strong>Rochester</strong> high school, he received his M.D. degree from the Indiana<br />

university school of Medicine and was a member of the Indiana State Medical Association,<br />

Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, and the <strong>Fulton</strong> <strong>County</strong> Medical Society. A<br />

former chief of staff of Woodlawn hospital, he also was <strong>1970</strong> fund drive chairman of the I.U.<br />

medical school.<br />

Dr. Rowe was a member of St. Joseph’s church, Moose, Eagles and Elks lodges;<br />

Fraternal Order of Police and National Rifle association.<br />

He was born Nov. 12, 1908, at Athens, the son of Frederick and Grace HEETER ROWE,<br />

and had spent most of his life in this community. His marriage was Aug. 21, 1941, at<br />

Indianapolis, to Margaret LEE, who survives.<br />

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Karl (Lee Ann) NEWCOMB, St. Mary’s-of-the-<br />

Woods, Ind., and Miss Dina G. ROWE, a senior at Indiana State university; one son, Patrik H.
