This subject helps the student understand a range <strong>of</strong> forms <strong>of</strong><br />

data and ways <strong>of</strong> organising both qualitative and quantitative<br />

data. It helps students comprehend basic methods <strong>of</strong> analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> these data as well as how to interpret data for particular<br />

purposes in a variety <strong>of</strong> employment contexts.<br />

Enterprise<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Develops an understanding <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> the enterprise in a<br />

modified market economy. The emphasis is on concepts<br />

relevant to microeconomics but the importance <strong>of</strong> the<br />

g. macroeconomic context in which decisions are made will be<br />

stressed. The student should develop skills <strong>of</strong> analysis and<br />

2. synthesis based on an understanding <strong>of</strong> economic concepts.<br />

Examines the ideas which underpin concepts <strong>of</strong> equity and<br />

m opportunity and explores how these ideas and concepts are<br />

concepts and the critical analysis <strong>of</strong> their applicability in<br />

particular work structures is investigated.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Examines the area <strong>of</strong> occupational health and safety both in<br />

its social and legislative contexts and in its organisational<br />

context. lnvestigates the impact <strong>of</strong> illness in the workplace<br />

and the broad legal and social issues <strong>of</strong> health and illness in<br />

the society and the workplace, e.g., prevention,<br />

rehabilitation, improved work practices, retraining, access to<br />

medical care.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

lnvestigates the forces for cooperation and conflict as they<br />

impact on the industrial relations arena in complex<br />

technological societies. Explores the roles and boundaries <strong>of</strong><br />

government involvement and the legal dimensions <strong>of</strong><br />

~ndustrial relations as they affect the roles <strong>of</strong> employers and<br />

unions in a changing environment. Case studies <strong>of</strong> the<br />

interaction between these <strong>of</strong>ten competing groups are<br />

examined.<br />

<strong>Technology</strong><br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Explores the theoretical perspectives which influence<br />

understanding about the evolution <strong>of</strong> information<br />

technology and its place in different economic contexts.<br />

lnvestigates the design and use <strong>of</strong> information systems and<br />

develops the skills <strong>of</strong> needs analysis to arrive at decisions<br />

governing the selection and implementation <strong>of</strong> appropriate<br />

technological solutions adapted to the needs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

workplace.<br />

Management<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Considers how interpersonal and group communication<br />

theory can inform the skills <strong>of</strong> discussion, presentation and<br />

conciliation involved in negotiation. Analyses the dynamics <strong>of</strong><br />

change and how change occurs within complex societies and<br />

organisations. Develops the ability to understand, devise,<br />

implement and monitor strategies to change aspects <strong>of</strong> the<br />

way workplaces operate.<br />

Report Writing<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Examines the nature, purposes, styles and formats for report<br />

writing. Particular audiences are used to highlight the need<br />

to decide what sort <strong>of</strong> data should be collected, how they<br />

should be analysed and how they should be presented in<br />

writing according to the judgments about purposes identified<br />

by the writer <strong>of</strong> the report. Setting out and production <strong>of</strong><br />

reports will also be covered.<br />

~ ~ 2 1 0 Research Skills<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Assist students to develop skills in secondary and primary<br />

research. Students will develop the ability to distinguish<br />

appropriate from inappropriate research methodologies, to<br />

locate sources <strong>of</strong> published social data, to analyse secondary<br />

data and to carry out small-scale independent research<br />

projects using both qualitative and quantitative techniques.<br />

AD21 I Writing and Producing for Public<br />

Release<br />

No. <strong>of</strong> hours per week: three hours<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Instructs students in the appropriate formats and production<br />

modes for preparing material to be disseminated through the<br />

written and electronic mass media. Prepares students to<br />

identify the characteristics <strong>of</strong> target audiences and to write<br />

text appropriate for particular audiences. Training in in-house<br />

journalism techniques will also be included.
