Teaching Sectors<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> has two teaching sectors under the control <strong>of</strong> one<br />

Council: the Higher Education Sector and the Technical and<br />

Further Education Division (TAFE).<br />

Higher Education Sector<br />

The Higher Education Sector <strong>of</strong>fers pr<strong>of</strong>essional qualifications<br />

ranging from degrees <strong>of</strong> Bachelor to graduate qualifications<br />

(certificates, diplomas and degrees <strong>of</strong> Master and PhD).<br />

The Higher Education Sector comprises two divisions: The<br />

Division <strong>of</strong> Business. Humanities and Social Science (which<br />

incorporates the previous faculties <strong>of</strong> Business and Arts) and the<br />

Division <strong>of</strong> Science, Engineering and Design (incorporating the<br />

previous faculties <strong>of</strong> Applied Science and Engineering and the<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Design).<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 901 9 students were enrolled in the Higher Education<br />

Sector in 1994, made up <strong>of</strong> 5065 full-time students and 3954<br />

part-time students.<br />

Technical and Further Education Division (TAFE)<br />

TAFE Division <strong>of</strong>fers courses at pr<strong>of</strong>essional and para-<br />

~r<strong>of</strong>essional level coverinq associate diploma, advanced<br />

'ertificate, apprenticeship. VCE and access programs. A number<br />

<strong>of</strong> specialist courses are also provided for industry and the<br />

community.<br />

The TAFE Division is made up <strong>of</strong> three schools: The School <strong>of</strong><br />

Business and lnformation Systems, the School <strong>of</strong> Engineering<br />

and Industrial Science and the School <strong>of</strong> Social Sciences and<br />

Arts.<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 12.2 17 students were enrolled into TAFE courses in<br />

1994, made up <strong>of</strong> 2532 full-time and 9685 part-time students<br />

(excluding short courses).<br />

Hawthorn Campus<br />

Hawthorn is <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s original campus, <strong>of</strong>fering a broad<br />

range <strong>of</strong> undergraduate higher education and TAFE courses in<br />

applied science, business, humanities and engineering. Most <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s postgraduate courses are <strong>of</strong>fered on this campus.<br />

The Hawthorn campus is also the site <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s<br />

research and training centres.<br />

Situated in the heart <strong>of</strong> Hawthorn, the campus has expanded<br />

from its original single building <strong>of</strong> 1908 to cover a sizeable area<br />

from Buiwood Road to Park Street in the north, and across to<br />

Henry Street in the east. The second stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s TAFE<br />

Division was <strong>of</strong>ficially opened on May 12 1994, a state-<strong>of</strong>-theart<br />

building which complements the two TAFE buildings opened<br />

in 1991.<br />

The Hawthorn campus <strong>of</strong>fers a wide variety <strong>of</strong> short courses<br />

through the Centre for Business Development and Training, and<br />

also through the various schools, departments and centres <strong>of</strong><br />

the Higher Education Sector and TAFE Division.<br />

Students enjoy a full range <strong>of</strong> services and facilities including a<br />

library, bookshop, sports centre, cafeterias, health centre,<br />

childcare, counselling and careers advice centre. The Hawthorn<br />

Campus is located seven kilometres east <strong>of</strong> the city, and is easily<br />

accessible by train and tram. Limited areas have been set aside<br />

for student parking. The campus is also close to the Glenferrie<br />

Road shopping centre which <strong>of</strong>fers a wide variety <strong>of</strong> goods and<br />

services.<br />

Moorool bark Campus<br />

Mooroolbark campus is located in the leafy outer eastern<br />

suburbs <strong>of</strong> Melbourne, and was established to increase tertiarv<br />

education options for students in these outlying areas. students<br />

enjoy an intimate atmosphere in an attractive landscaped native<br />

setting, with all the amenities <strong>of</strong> a modern university.<br />

The campus <strong>of</strong>fers bachelor degree programs in the areas <strong>of</strong><br />

business, applied science and social science. The Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />

Business <strong>of</strong>fers majors in accounting, economics and marketing,<br />

while the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Applied Science <strong>of</strong>fers Management,<br />

Science and Computing and Computing and Psychology as two<br />

courses exclusive to Mooroolbark campus. The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers major studies in media, psychology and sociology.<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts students can also study subjects from business<br />

or applied science programs at the Mooroolbark Campus.<br />

The campus has a fully equipped undergraduate library with<br />

access to Hawthorn campus holdings, a cafeteria, student<br />

lounge, computer aided laboratories, and excellent social and<br />

recreational facilities including tennis courts and a swimming<br />

pool.<br />

The campus is easily accessible by train with a connecting bus<br />

operating from Lilydale Station. There is also ample carparking<br />

on the campus.<br />

Prahran Campus<br />

Prahran campus (formerly Prahran College <strong>of</strong> TAFE) joined<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> in 1992. It <strong>of</strong>fers TAFE<br />

courses in business, social sciences and arts and higher<br />

education degrees in graphic and industrial design.<br />

The School <strong>of</strong> Business and lnformation Systems, and the<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Social Science and Arts <strong>of</strong>fer associate diploma,<br />

advanced certificate and certificate courses via full-time or parttime<br />

enrolment. In 1994 the <strong>Swinburne</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Design was<br />

permanently relocated to Prahran campus, expanding the range<br />

<strong>of</strong> graphic and industrial design courses to incorporate higher<br />

education degrees.<br />

A large number <strong>of</strong> fee-for-service short courses are also <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

in the areas <strong>of</strong> entertainment, arts, language, fitness leader,<br />

business, computing and information technology. External study<br />

options are also available through the Off-Campus Centre.<br />

The campus is ideally situated in cosmopolitan Prahran close to<br />

the market, shops and cafes. It is small and friendly with a<br />

mixture <strong>of</strong> modern and historical buildings. Only five kilometres<br />

south <strong>of</strong> Melbourne, Prahran campus is easily accessible by<br />

train, tram and bus.
