Subject aims and description<br />
This subject provides an introduction to pre-modern Korea <strong>of</strong><br />
particular relevance to the understanding <strong>of</strong> modern Korean<br />
society. The subject deals with the structure <strong>of</strong> politics and<br />
society <strong>of</strong> the Chosen Period (1392-191 O), with particular<br />
attention paid to developments in Neo-Confucian thought<br />
during the period. The subject will use English language<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
The objective <strong>of</strong> the subject will be to introduce students to<br />
the Korean language and to give them a secure command <strong>of</strong><br />
its basic structures. This will entail instruction in langauge<br />
patterns, grammar, reading, writing, aural comprehension<br />
and socio-linguistics. A wide range <strong>of</strong> audio-visual materials<br />
will be used, including language slides, cassette tapes, realia,<br />
and video-cassettes. Audio cassettes <strong>of</strong> the course material<br />
will be available to students for purchase or loan.<br />
Students undertaking a major in Korean are strongly advised<br />
to enrol for AK102 Traditional Korea.<br />
