Campus changes<br />

The <strong>Swinburne</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Design has relocated its activities to<br />

new accommodation on <strong>Swinburne</strong> Prahran campus at 144<br />

High Street, Prahran. This relocation brings together superior<br />

facilities and studio accommodation for all students<br />

undertaking the programs.<br />

Changes to School <strong>of</strong> Design<br />

Courses<br />

The School <strong>of</strong> Design has introducted a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Design and<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Design (Honours) course in 1994 for both Graphic<br />

Design and Industrial Design to replace the diploma and<br />

degree courses. The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Design is a three year full-time<br />

degree course and the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Design with Honours<br />

program is four years full-time study. Concurrent with the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> the new undergraduate courses, higher<br />

degree programs leading to masters qualifications by research<br />

and coursework are being developed and will be <strong>of</strong>fered in<br />

1995.<br />

The subject codes and course structures in this handbook may<br />

change.<br />

4 Assessment<br />

2. For Graphic Design: Each year <strong>of</strong> the course is taken as a<br />

3 whole and in order to qualify, an overall pass must be achieved<br />

- on the vear's work.<br />

. Classification for Honours will be based on the results<br />

achieved.<br />

A Divisional Pass may be awarded under exceptional<br />

circumstances. The School Board is the final authority for<br />

determining the results in any <strong>of</strong> the assessments for the<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Design. The Division <strong>of</strong> Science, Engineering and<br />

Design has responsibility for the processing <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

awards for the School <strong>of</strong> Design.<br />

Examinations<br />

Students must enter for all subjects in a particular year <strong>of</strong> the<br />

course except where an exemption has been approved or<br />

electives <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

The form <strong>of</strong> the examination and the content <strong>of</strong> the project<br />

work assessment will be determined by the panel <strong>of</strong> examiners<br />

and moderators appointed by the School Board.<br />

Attendance<br />

Students are expected to attend all lectures, assignment<br />

briefings, progress tutorials and critiques and timetabled studio<br />

sessions in each semester.<br />

The Progress or Review Committee may preclude a student<br />

from further attendance, or the right to further assessment, if<br />

the lecturer responsible reports the student's attendance and<br />

participation to be unsatisfactory.<br />

These courses may only be taken on a full-time basis.<br />

General conditions<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> reserves the right to retain any work executed by<br />

students as part <strong>of</strong> their course studies. Work not required may<br />

be claimed by the student after it has been assessed.<br />

The courses are not available for part-time or external study.<br />

Entrance requirements<br />

For Graphic Design applicants, VCE prerequisite studies:<br />

English: grade average <strong>of</strong> C or better in Units 3 and 4.<br />

Recommended subjects: Art or art related subjects.<br />

For Industrial Design applicants, VCE prerequisite studies:<br />

English, a grade average <strong>of</strong> C or better in Units 3 and 4 , a<br />

pass in mathematics or science subject to year 11 is desirable<br />

and some knowledge <strong>of</strong> instrumental and rendered drawings.<br />

The folio should include three-dimensional models, technical<br />

drawings, renderings, photographs and sketches, including<br />

developmental back-up work and anv other written work. If a<br />

folio is not available or incomplete, a'short test may b e given.<br />

Note: Art studies undertaken subsequent to a satisfactorily<br />

completed VCE qualification should not be regarded as a<br />

prerequisite, however these studies may enhance an<br />

applicant's chance <strong>of</strong> entry<br />

Special requirements: All applicants, including those from<br />

interstate and overseas, must participate in a preselection<br />

program and attend an interview and folio presentation in<br />

December if required. This program requires applicants to<br />

submit copies <strong>of</strong> slides <strong>of</strong> work and a written response to<br />

questions. Applicants required for interview should bring a folio<br />

<strong>of</strong> their own work which indicates a preparation and ability to<br />

undertake this course and be able to demonstrate an<br />

awareness <strong>of</strong> the course content and career opportunities.<br />

All applicants who specify either graphic design or industrial<br />

design must follow carefully the procedure for enrolment<br />

which is given with dates and other details in the Victorian<br />

Tertiary Admissions Centre publication, Guide to Courses in<br />

Colleges and Universities. This is published in August, and<br />

distributed to all secondary schools, or is available on<br />

application to the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, 40 Park<br />

Street, South Melbourne 3205, telephone 690 7977. <strong>Please</strong><br />

refer to 'Application procedure', in the general section <strong>of</strong> this<br />

Handbook.<br />

All applicants without resident status must apply direct to<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>.<br />

All overseas applicants, including Australian citizens, must be<br />

able to attend for interview, if required.<br />

Applications for second year and higher must be made direct<br />

to <strong>Swinburne</strong> and not through VTAC.
