3.7 The Student Network Discipline Panel will conduct<br />
proceedings in strict accordance with the doctrine<br />
<strong>of</strong> natural justice, which entitles students to a<br />
hearing which is free from bias.<br />
4. Appeals<br />
4.1 A student shall have the right <strong>of</strong> appeal to the<br />
Vice-Chancellor from a decision <strong>of</strong> the Student<br />
Network Discipline Panel. This right shall extend<br />
the imposition <strong>of</strong> any penalty, as well as, the<br />
finding <strong>of</strong> the Panel.<br />
4.2 A student shall have the right to appeal to the<br />
Vice-Chancellor if there has been a breach <strong>of</strong><br />
process by the Student Network Disciplinary Panel.<br />
4.3 A student shall have the right to re-argue their<br />
case andlor submit new evidence.<br />
5. Representation<br />
5.1 A student whom it has alleged has breached 'The<br />
Code <strong>of</strong> Practice' shall have the right, at any point<br />
during the operation <strong>of</strong> the Disciplinary Code, to<br />
seek the advice andlor representation from the<br />
Student Union or other advocate <strong>of</strong> their choosing.<br />
6. Confidentiality<br />
6.1 Confidentiality will be observed at all times<br />
throughout the exercise <strong>of</strong> this Student Disciplinary<br />
Code.<br />
1. Definitions<br />
Statute for the degree <strong>of</strong><br />
Master (by research)<br />
In this statute:<br />
Council means the Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Technology</strong>;<br />
<strong>University</strong> means <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>;<br />
Divisional Board means the sub-committee <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>'s<br />
Academic Board called the 'Divisional Board (or any authorised<br />
sub-committee there<strong>of</strong>) which is responsible for studies being<br />
undertaken in the area;<br />
Head <strong>of</strong> School means the person appointed Head <strong>of</strong> School in<br />
a Hiaher Education Division and res~onsible for studies on the<br />
part?cular discipline.<br />
2. Title <strong>of</strong> degree<br />
The degree <strong>of</strong> Master may be awarded in a field <strong>of</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />
any faculty <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>. Degrees shall be designated as<br />
follows:<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Applied Science<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Business<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Engineering<br />
MAppSc<br />
MA<br />
MBus<br />
MEng<br />
3. Grading <strong>of</strong> degree<br />
The degree <strong>of</strong> Master shall be awarded in one grade only.<br />
4. Admission to candidature<br />
4.1 Entry requirements<br />
A person wishing to be admitted to candidature<br />
shall have:<br />
4.1.1 qualified, at a sufficiently meritorious<br />
standard, for a degree <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> (in<br />
a field relevant to the work proposed) or<br />
such other degree as the Divisional Board<br />
may deem equivalent for this purpose; or<br />
4.1.2 qualified for an award judged by the<br />
Divisional Board to be <strong>of</strong> relevant character<br />
and appropriate standard; and have<br />
experience which the Divisional Board<br />
deems to be a suitable preparation for the<br />
applicants proposed field <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
4.2 Application<br />
No application for admission to candidature may<br />
be approved by the Divisional Board except with<br />
the support <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> School.<br />
4.3 Supervision and facilities<br />
An applicant shall be admitted to candidature only<br />
if the Divisional Board is satisfied that the<br />
proposed program is a suitable study in the<br />
discipline or area concerned and that adequate<br />
facilities and supervision are available.<br />
5. Program<br />
The candidate shall carry out a program <strong>of</strong> research,<br />
investigation or development involving the submission <strong>of</strong> a<br />
major thesis embodying the results <strong>of</strong> that program carried<br />
out during the period <strong>of</strong> candidature in:<br />
5.1 a school or other recognised unit <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>,<br />
OR<br />
5.2 industrial, commercial, governmental, educational<br />
or research organisations approved by the<br />
Divisional Board, or<br />
5.3 a combination <strong>of</strong> 5.1 and 5.2.<br />
In addition, a candidate may be required to undertake<br />
other formal studies as approved by the Divisional Board.<br />
6. Duration<br />
The candidate may undertake the program on a full-time<br />
or part-time basis. Excluding any periods <strong>of</strong> intermission as<br />
set out below, the duration <strong>of</strong> candidature shall be:<br />
6.1 for a candidate whose degree under 4.1 .I or<br />
whose award under 4.1.2 involved less than four<br />
years full-time study (or its part-time equivalent):<br />
not less than twenty-one months and not, under<br />
normal circumstances, more than thirty-six months<br />
<strong>of</strong> full-time study;<br />
6.2 for a candidate whose degree under 4.1 .I or<br />
whose award under 4.1.2 involved not less than<br />
four years full-time study (or its part-time<br />
equivalent): not less than fifteen months and not,<br />
under normal circumstances, more than thirty-six<br />
months <strong>of</strong> full-time study;
