Subject aims and description<br />

The subject involves an examination <strong>of</strong> the legal controls<br />

imposed on the manufacturing, labelling, packaging,<br />

distribution, promotion, pricing, and retailing <strong>of</strong> goods and<br />

(where applicable) services.<br />

Topics involved in this study are: the liability <strong>of</strong> manufacturers<br />

and retailers <strong>of</strong> goods at common law and under statute;<br />

proprietary interests in products; packaging and labelling <strong>of</strong><br />

goods; advertising and promotion <strong>of</strong> goods and services;<br />

restrictive trade practices.<br />

This subject aims to provide a practical knowledge and<br />

awareness <strong>of</strong> the laws which impinge upon the function <strong>of</strong><br />

retailing, concentrating upon those areas affecting the dayto-day<br />

activities <strong>of</strong> the business.<br />

Subject description<br />

Topics covered in this subject include the liability <strong>of</strong> retailers<br />

under the laws <strong>of</strong> contract and negligence, crime and<br />

retailing, establishing a retail business, franchising, the<br />

retailer and credit, the retailer and safety, trade description<br />

and consumer protection laws, and other general rights and<br />

duties owed by retailers.<br />
